Un « dialogue sur le destin » attribué à Bardesane (154-222), le « philosophe araméen », est connu depuis qu’Eusèbe de Césarée en a signalé l’existence, à la fin du IIIe ou au début du IVe siècle. L’ouvrage ne deviendra accessible qu’en 1855 grâce à l’édition, par William Cureton, d’un écrit syriaque intitulé Livre des lois des pays, un dialogue dont le principal interlocuteur est Bardesane et dans lequel on retrouve un parallèle étroit, sinon littéral, aux passages cités par Eusèbe. Depuis cette date, le Livre des lois des pays, qualifié de chef-d’œuvre et considéré comme « le plus ancien texte syriaque après la Bible » (Duval), n’a cessé de susciter l’intérêt des spécialistes du syriaque et de la littérature chrétienne ancienne. Dans ce dialogue, Bardesane aborde de façon magistrale un des thèmes centraux de la réflexion théologique et philosophique de tout temps, la relation entre la providence et la toute-puissance divines, la liberté humaine et les contraintes de la nature et du destin. La polémique que Bardesane oppose au déterminisme et au fatalisme astral se fonde en bonne partie sur l’exposé des mœurs, coutumes ou lois des « barbares ». Le Livre des lois des pays offre la version la plus développée de cet argument ethnographique, qui consistait à tirer parti de la diversité régionale des « lois » pour réfuter les astrologues. Même si l’on hésite à voir dans le Livre des lois des pays un authentique écho de la pensée de Bardesane, il constitue l’un des monuments les plus anciens de la littérature syriaque et l’un des tout premiers dialogues de la littérature chrétienne.

The purpose of the volume is to explore how specific historical and socio-cultura conditions of late antiquity shaped the development of Christian thought.The authors of the volume analyse various aspects of these conditions, particularly those of a textual and institutional nature, as they are reflected in the hermeneutic and philosophical principles of Christian discourse. This focus sheds new light on unexplored features of Christian literature, such as the influence of manuscript culture, early church institutions and practices, exegetical techniques, and philosophical curricula.

"Ancient translations of late antique Christian literature serve to spread the body of knowledge to wider audiences in often radically new cultural contexts. For the texts which are translated, their versions are not only sometimes crucial textual witnesses, but also important testimonies of independent strands of reception, cast in the cultural context of the new language. Maître Eckhart a été un grand lecteur des Pères de l’Église, qui étaient les auctoritates, les autorités auxquelles il se référait pour commenter l’Écriture. Mais, si les textes des Pères latins lui étaient directement accessibles, il n’en allait pas de même pour les Pères grecs qui demandaient à être traduits. Il a disposé d’un certain nombre de traductions et d’outils de travail, comme la Catena aurea de S. Thomas d’Aquin. Ils seront identifiés par des spécialistes dans cet ouvrage, ce qui permettra de comprendre comment Eckhart a lu Origène, Jean Chrysostome, Maxime le Confesseur, Jean Damascène... et de préciser l’interprétation qu’il en a donnée, ce qui amènera à rechercher pourquoi il a eu recours aux Pères grecs et quelle a été leur influence pour la version occidentale de la divinisation qu’il a proposée avec la naissance de Dieu dans l’âme. Ce travail sur les sources patristiques, tant latines que grecques, renouvelle les études eckhartiennes. Il est réalisé dans le cadre du projet ANR – 17 FRAL – 0002 TEAPREA (Teaching and Preaching with Patristic auctoritates. Meister Eckhart in France and Geramny, past and present). Ce volume, consacré à la lecture des Pères grecs par Eckhart fait suite à celui que nous avons consacré aux Pères latins et il sera complété par l’Index del’ensemble des sources patristiques d’Eckhart, qui sera un outil de référence pour l’étude de l’œuvre d’Eckhart.

Patristic Literature in Arabic Translations explores the Arabic translations of the Greek and Syriac Church Fathers, focusing on those produced in the Palestinian monasteries and at Sinai in the 8th–10th centuries and in Antioch during Byzantine rule (969–1084). These Arabic translations preserve patristic texts lost in the original languages. They offer crucial information about the diffusion and influence of patristic heritage among Middle Eastern Christians from the 8th century to the present. A systematic examination of Arabic patristic translations sheds light on the development of Muslim and Jewish theological thought.
