"Body Image: Psychological Predictors, Social Influences and Gender Differences opens with a presentation of results of a study on sport-active and sport-inactive adolescents, their perception of body image and their associated eating habits and sport participation motives. Following this, the authors examined the association between feminist beliefs, empowerment, and positive body image through an online sample of 302 British women. Additionally, the authors examine adolescent boys' body image and its relationship to their subjective well-being, as well as the effect of the parent-adolescent relationship on body image and their subjective well-being. The penultimate chapter discusses research findings regarding body image issues in men of color. Risk factors associated with body dissatisfaction in men of color are explored, including a discussion of cultural and race-related factors that may impact the development of body image issues. The "allocentric lock" model of eating disorders is explored in the concluding chapter, providing a rich conceptual framework for elucidating the source of body image disturbance and factors causing patients with eating disorders to be locked in a body that they detest"--

Publieksversie van proefschrift 'Reading beyond the female'. Driekwart van de grote literaire prijzen gaat naar mannelijke schrijvers. Van de 165 bestverkochte literaire werken werden er 25 geschreven door een vrouw. Het DWDD-boekenpanel koos slechts in 27% van de gevallen voor een vrouwelijke auteur. Maar vrouwen schrijven dan ook voornamelijk over de liefde en persoonlijke wissewasjes. Toch? Corina Koolen promoveerde op genderongelijkheid in de Nederlandse letteren. The handbook is a reference work of thirty-two essays jointly written by specialists in the history of military and war and experts in gender and women's history. The collection, covering four centuries from the Thirty Years' War to the present Wars of Globalization, investigates how gender contributed to the shaping of warfare and the military and was at the same time transformed by them. The essays explore this question by focusing on themes such as the cultural representations of military and war; war mobilization of and war support by society; war experiences on the home fronts and battlefronts; gendered war violence; military service and citizenship; war demobilization, postwar societies, and memories; and attempts to regulate and tame warfare and prevent new wars.
