Programmes and interventions to counter violent extremism (CVE) have become widespread across Europe. CVE is a relatively new and very complex phenomenon. The term itself has become a - contested - catch phrase for a broad array of interventions targeting different populations at different stages in the radicalization process. The complexity of CVE has resulted in a serious lack of evaluations in the field. Those few evaluations that we can draw upon are very heterogeneous, both in terms of evaluation method and the type of interventions that they address. It is therefore impossible to make any grounded statements on the effectiveness of CVE. Academia thus has little theoretical basis for adequately advising the policy and practitioner community on the best course of action. We are thus in need of an evaluation method that can accommodate the complexity of CVE, while providing an authoritative basis for new evaluations and at the same time exposing incorrect or too limited, normative assumptions in CVE policy. We also require a 'meta-analysis' method for synthesizing the variety of evaluations available to produce generic insights. This study applies and further develops realistic evaluation and realist review to provide an evaluation and synthesis method for complex social programmes such as CVE. The end result is heuristic development of the realistic evaluation method which provides a basis for future CVE evaluation studies. The dissertation also provides insights on relevant contexts and mechanisms in CVE, which will help policymakers further develop their CVE programmes. (Provided by publisher)

Der Christliche Orient, die in ihrer Frühzeit am weitesten ausgedehnte sowie kulturell und sprachlich vielfältigste Ursprungsregion einer Weltregion, hat einen gewaltigen Schatz an Textzeugnissen hinterlassen. Dank philologischer Meisterarbeit sind diese Zeugnisse inzwischen größtenteils aufbereitet und gesichert. So verdienstvoll diese Bemühungen sind, sie lassen die Frage offen, ob diese uns fremd gewordene Kultur nur für sich selbst spricht oder ob sie uns in ihrer Bedeutung epochenübergreifend näher rücken kann.Um dieser Frage nachzugehen bedarf es einer Relecture der vorhandenen Texte. Heinz Otto Luthe unternimmt dies am Beispiel ausgewählter Zeugnisse aus der Frühzeit des syrischen Christentums, Auszügen aus Bardaisan, Aphrahat und Ephräm. Dabei erweist sich die Kulturbedeutung dieser Epoche als ein Vermächtnis dreifacher Öffnung und Herausforderung: einer Öffnung des Zeithorizontes und damit der Herausforderung des Unabgeschlossenen; einer Öffnung des Kulturhorizontes und damit der Herausforderung des Vielfältigen; und schließlich einer Öffnung des Sprachhorizontes und damit der Herausforderung des Uneindeutigen. Dieses Vermächtnis der Öffnung konnte auch mit der fortschreitenden Institutionalisierung der christlichen Kirchen und dem damit verbundenen Anspruch auf Endgültigkeit, Ausschließlichkeit und Eindeutigkeit nicht völlig verdrängt werden. Vielmehr erweist es sich im Prozess der Ökumene als weiterhin wirksam. Dabei bleibt seine Bedeutung nicht nur im Hinblick auf den Entwicklungsprozess christlicher Kirchen weiter zu klären, sondern stellt darüber hinaus auch für die Untersuchung der Dynamik von Kultur ganz allgemein eine vielversprechende Aufgabe dar.

“Anti-imperial” readings of ancient texts are popular, but are they right? What does it mean to engage in “political” interpretation of ancient texts? What can Biblical scholars learn from Classicists about the emperor cult? These are a few of the questions addressed in this volume. Highlighting the work of scholars in Eastern and Western Europe, it offers fresh perspectives on “political” aspects of early Jewish and Christian texts. Contributions include exegetical studies with literary and historical interests, as well as critical hermeneutical reflection. Essays analyze texts from the Hebrew Bible, Septuagint, and New Testament, plus Josephus and extra-canonical Christian literature.

In this study, Andrew Bowden analyzes Paul's use of "desire" (ἐπιθυμέω, ἐπιθυμητής, and ἐπιθυμία) in his undisputed epistles. After introducing critical research on these lexemes, the author applies John Lyons's theory of semantic analysis to the use of ἐπιθυμέω κτλ in Roman imperial texts. Based on these observations, he makes a hypothesis concerning the common co-occurrences of "desire" in Roman imperial texts, its antonyms, the objects it longs for, and its use within metaphorical discourse. This hypothesis is then tested by looking at the use of "desire" in Dio Chrysostom, Epictetus, Lucian of Samosata, the Cynic epistles, and Second Temple Jewish texts. Andrew Bowden illustrates how, contrary to the view of many scholars, these Roman imperial authors consistently mention positive objects of "desire." He then applies these findings concerning "desire" to Paul, yielding important and sometimes unexpected discoveries.
