In Conjectures and Controversy in the Study of Fundamentalism, W. Paul Williamson takes a critical look at the sociohistorical emergence of fundamentalism and examines how historians constructed popular, though questionable, conceptions of the movement that have dominated decades of empirical research in psychology. He further analyzes the notions of militancy and anti-modernity as valid characterizations of fundamentalism and examines whether fundamentalism, as a Christian Protestant phenomenon, is useful in labelling global forms of religious extremism and violence. In observing the lack of theory-driven research, the publication offers theories that situate fundamentalism as a social psychological phenomenon as opposed to some personal predisposition. Le discours du Pape Benoît XVI à l'université de Ratisbonne en 2006 a suscité de nombreuses réactions, notamment dans les milieux musulmans qui ont monté en épingle un exemple que prenait Ratzinger pour étayer son propos. Au-delà de la polémique, le discours du théologien soulève la très importante question de l'articulation entre foi et raison et, par extrapolation, on pourrait dire entre fanatisme et raison en matière religieuse.Au premier abord, il s'agit d'encourager une réflexion sérieuse sur le rapport entre religions et violence. Les théologies élaborées dans les monothéismes, et dans le cas particulier au sein du christianisme, sont appelées à s'interroger sur le rapport de leur tradition religieuse à l'altérité, sur leur confrontation avec la diversité, et sur l'insertion de cette foi en un Dieu unique dans un contexte marqué par le pluralisme de convictions.La deuxième perspective ouvre une réflexion philosophique et théologique sur les représentations de Dieu. Les monothéismes sont invités à s'interroger sur l'identité de ce Dieu unique dont elles professent la foi et à critiquer, donc à démasquer ses images "démoniaques" qui représentent des "pathologies" de la foi. La troisième perspective interroge les modèles de rationalité. Dans son Discours, le pape émérite constate que les contemporains sont fortement influencés par une logique scientifico-technologique, qui conditionne leur perception de la réalité et leur compréhension de Dieu, au point de creuser un fossé entre religion et science.Benoît XVI ne nie pas certains effets positifs de la modernité ou certains effets négatifs du fidéisme et propose donc de dépasser l'opposition stérile entre foi et rationalité moderne. Il revient ainsi aux théologiens contemporains, appartenant aux trois monothéismes, de s'engager pour une défense du rôle de la raison dans l'intelligence et l'existence croyantes.
