This book is the first systematic collection and discussion of dwellings in the Umayyad 'cities' (madāʼin) and 'palaces' (quṣūr) of Bilād al-Shām. Giuseppe Labisi offers an overview of the apartments within and identifies the architectural models that inspired Umayyad dwellings. This study also allows the precise identification of the origin of pre-Islamic dwelling models and their reinterpretation in Umayyad domestic architecture. Through classification, the author has been able to group the apartments of quṣūr chronologically by the reigns of the Umayyad caliphs. The identification of the dictates of Islamic domestic tradition and the characteristics of early Islamic Arabia and Late Antique houses offer original insight and allow us to situate the Umayyad residences of Bilād al-Shām in their wider cultural context. Additionally, Umayyad dwellings have been classified and presented in a rich catalogue as an appendix within the text

Throughout the twentieth century housing displays have proven to be a singular genre of architectural and design exhibitions. By crossing geographies and adopting multiple scales of observation - from domestic space to urban visions - this volume investigates a set of unexplored events devoted to housing and dwelling, organised by technical, professional, cultural or governmental institutions from the interwar years to the Cold War. The book offers a first critical assessment of twentieth-century housing exhibits and explores the role of exhibitions in the codification of notions of domesticity, social models, policies, and architectural and urban discourse. At the intersection of housing studies and the history of exhibitions, 'The Housing Project' not only offers a novel angle on architectural history but also enriches scholarly perspectives in urban studies, cultural and media history, design, and consumption studies.

"Interest in living off the grid, i.e. self-sufficiently without relying on public services such as the municipal water supply, electricity, or local sewage and gas systems, has come on the scene as a greener, cheaper, and more independent way of life. Homes that are off-grid generally allow for a smaller carbon footprint, and a sense of freedom and self-sufficiency. Living Off-Grid sets you free from depending on a company, either using solar panels, wind turbines, a micro water system, or a combination of these technologies. Other times, an Off-Grid system can work as an energy backup or be complemented by the grid when renewable technologies cannot produce all the energy needed. We have gathered different examples of nature-powered homes, which are partially or completely off-grid, to focus on the importance of these homes, which put sustainability first"--Publisher's description.
