Abstract

Title in English: Phenomenological-pragmatist interpretation of the hyper-connectivist world: on topics of philosophy of information Against the background of the ideas of selected phenomenologists (Martin Heidegger, Jan Patočka, Jan Sokol) and pragmatist philosophers (Marc Johnson, Georg Lakoff or Antonio Damasio), the monograph reflects the phenomenon of the philosophy of information in a new framework than Luciano Floridi does. The monograph takes much more on transforming the contemporary world and its relationship to education and thought. On the example of individual sub-facets, they form a comprehensive critical reflection on how it is possible with the philosophy of information and the philosophy of education. It strives to be a clear guide to the contemporary world, which is trying to think new ways.

Abstract

This book explores, and problematises, what it means to be ‘critical’ in education research. Drawing together chapters from diverse global perspectives, this volume aims to stimulate dialogue about possible meanings of criticality in education research. In doing so, they question why criticality has become such an essential part of education, and what researchers expect of it. The book opens up and contests some of the deficiencies of criticality in education research: ultimately it is not a global term, but often creates a false binary between East and West. Offering an alternative trajectory to educational narratives surrounding criticality, this book will be of interest and value to scholars of critical pedagogy and comparative education. Ashley Simpson is Assistant Professor at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, China. His research specialises in intercultural education, discourse theories and methods, and critical approaches to democracy. Fred Dervin is Professor of Multicultural Education at the University of Helsinki, Finland. He also holds honorary and visiting professorships in Australia, Canada, China, Luxembourg, Malaysia and Sweden. He specialises in intercultural communication education, the sociology of multiculturalism and student and academic mobility.

Abstract

Why do I have to deal with theories, I just want to become a teacher? This is the question asked by student teachers in educational science and didactics. The contributions to the volume 'Theories! Horizons for Teacher Education' offer an answer to this question: On the one hand, our society needs the discussion about the overall orientation of its educational goals and likewise the fruitful dispute within the educational sciences and the reference sciences of the school subjects. In a time of political, social and cultural upheaval in education, the need for orienting reflection comes more to the fore. Theoretical discourses are the place of this self-orientation. Then, student teachers must be enabled to think multi-perspectively. They can learn this best by dealing with theories. The individual contributions of the volume show what theories make visible in a new way and what they close off on the other hand, if they are received in a one-sided or totalizing way. After all, theories have a genuine heuristic power, theories make visible, they open doors, they let us understand something anew. Accordingly, the contributions to this volume ask: Where can we find, whether in educational science or subject didactics, examples of aha experiences or of an understanding of larger contexts that only become possible through theoretical penetration? What do we see in the world, in our lives, and as a phenomenon in a completely new way when we have understood a theory?

Abstract

This handbook is an important reference work in understanding education systems in the South Asia region, their development trajectory, challenges and potential. The handbook includes the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries for discussion---Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka---while also considering countries such as Myanmar and the Maldives that have considerable shared history in the region. Such a comparative perspective is largely absent within the literature given the present paucity of intra-regional interaction. South Asian education systems are viewed primarily through a development lens in terms of inequalities, challenges and responses. However, the development of modern institutions of education and the challenges that it faces requires cultural and historical understanding of indigenous traditions as well as indigenous modern thinkers and education movements. Therefore, this encompassing reference w ork covers indigenous education traditions, formal education systems, including school and preschool education, higher and professional education, education financing systems and structures, teacher education systems, addressing huge linguistic and other diversities, and marginalization within the formal education system, and pedagogy and curricula. All the countries in this region have their own unique geographical, cultural, economic and political character and histories of interest and significance, and have responded to common issues such as overcoming the colonial legacy, language diversity, or girls’ education, or minority rights in education, in uniquely different ways. The sections therefore include country-specific perspectives as far as possible to highlight these issues. Internationally renowned specialists of South Asian education systems have contributed to this important reference work, making it an invaluable resource for researchers and students of education interested in South Asia. .

Abstract

This book shows the significance of the thinking of philosophers (and other key thinkers) in understanding the university and higher education. Through those explorations, it widens and substantially adds to the emerging philosophy of higher education. It builds on the historical literature on the idea of the university, and provides higher education scholars with highly accessible introductions to the thinking of key philosophers and thinkers, alerting them to a set of literature that otherwise might not be encountered. Until very recently, most of the debate on higher education – both in the public domain and in the scholarly literature – has been conducted with little regard to the philosophical literature. This is odd for two reasons. Firstly, much of the historical literature on the idea of the university – over the past two hundred years – has been written by philosophers and their thinking has largely gone unmined. Second, and perhaps even more importantly, many of the issues in the higher education debate are either philosophical in their nature, or require reflective thinking, and there lies to hand huge resources in the philosophical literature that can help in working through those issues. Issues such as what is to count as knowledge (in the university), wisdom, voice, democracy, culture, what it is to ‘be’ a student or academic, academic freedom, communication, work and disciplinarity cry out for the kind of insights that the philosophical literature – very broadly understood – can offer. This book attempts precisely to do this, to show how the work of key thinkers can help in deepening the higher education debate. Each chapter focuses on an individual thinker, giving both an insight into the thinker in question and accessibly drawing out something of their thinking and showing its significance in understanding the university and higher education. The editors provide a full-length introduction that marks out this large territory and prepares the ground for the reader. At a time of excessive student demand, and unprecedented debate as to what and whose public good higher education serves, comes an anthology, which learns from the past to understand, that which is yet to come. Philosophers on the University offers sophisticated and unafraid analyses of what constitutes a university, its truth, its responsibility, and its accountability. A book of deep thoughts and insights, surpassed only by the immense purpose which higher education ought to fulfill. Prof Nuraan Davids, Stellenbosch University, South Africa.

Abstract

This book addresses essential educational dimensions of the university that are often overlooked, not only by prevailing discourses and practices but also by standard critical approaches to higher education. Each chapter takes a different approach to the articulation of a ‘post-critical’ view of the university, and focuses on a specific dimension, including lectures, academic freedom, and the student experience. The ‘post-critical’ attitude offers an affirmative approach to the constitutive educational practices of the university. It is ‘post-’ because it is a movement in thought that comes after the critical, which, in its modern and postmodern forms is considered, in Latour’s terms, to have ‘run out of steam’. It is an attempt to articulate new conceptual and methodological tools that help us grasp our current conditions. It is not anti-critique; but rather than seeking to debunk current practices, this affirmative approach offers perspectives that shed new light on what we do as educators, on the essence of our educational practices, and on their immanent value. The focus on the educational, then, applies not only to practices that happen to take place in the educational space of the university, but also to those practices whose value we can understand in educational terms.
