Abstract

Legacies of modernism reappraised and reconstructed in an epic project by Renée GreenAmerican artist Renée Green (born 1959) spent two years engaged with the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University, during which she presented a series of interlinked public programs and exhibitions, culminated with her major exhibition Within Living Memory (2018). Green’s Carpenter project, Pacing, is a meditation spurred by inhabiting an architectural icon―Le Corbusier’s Carpenter Center―while exploring the historical and institutional legacies of modernism’s other forms, including cinema, visual art, poetry, music and literature. This handsome publication illuminates Green’s unfolding process, with a sequence of exhibitions that took place from 2015 and culminating in Pacing: Facing in Toronto; Tracing in Como, Italy; Placing in Berlin; Spacing in Lisbon; and Begin Again, Begin Again in Los Angeles. The result is a meditation on creative processes across histories and media, partially inspired by two architectural icons: Rudolf M. Schindler and Le Corbusier. Despite grand ambitions, Le Corbusier was only able to realize two buildings in the Americas, the Carpenter Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Casa Curuchet, in La Plata, Argentina. In Pacing, dreams, projections and geographically distant buildings are put into dialogue through time, weaving a layered constellation of unexpected relations.Lavishly illustrated, Renée Green: Pacing features new texts by Gloria Sutton and Fred Moten, and brings together a series of previously unpublished conversations between the artist and Yvonne Rainer, Nora M. Alter and Mason Leaver-Yap. Additional contributions are provided by Nicholas Korody, William S. Smith and Carpenter Center director Dan Byers.

Ding und Bild in der europäischen Romantik

Abstract

“Thing” and “image” are two key terms in the theoretical, literary, and philosophical texts of the Romantic era. This volume examines the historical and systematic connections between the two terms in European literature from the perspectives of philology, comparative literature, and aesthetics.

Abstract

In contrast to buildings divided by walls, monospace buildings are determined far less by its shell than by a reciprocal relationship between space and practices, objects, materials, and human bodies. Using the example of such one-room-architectures, this book explores the potential of an actor-network-theory (ANT) approach to space in the field of architecture. Sabine Hansmann focuses on the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich, England by Foster Associates (1978) to investigate the mutual entanglement of people, objects and building. She traces the work that is necessary in »doing« space and thus suggests a re-conceptualisation of space in architectural theory. Besprochen in: www.nouvelles-du-monde.com, 10.01.2021

Abstract

In the artistic / vocational academic education field, a phrase like "scientific research" generates several controversies; however, they can be the roots of interdisciplinary approaches, through which to build bridges between concern and research. The conference "Art and Research - contemporary challenges" aims, also through the published volume, to disseminate the results of research undertaken within the project Art and research - contemporary challenges (CNFIS-FDI-2020-0537). Held between the Doctoral Schools and Research Centers of George Enescu National University of Arts, from Iasi, the conference addresses doctoral students and doctoral coordinators, as well as all university teachers or masters interested in the topic of art interdisciplinarity, use of creative methods and critical tools. Three directions are pursued, namely Theater, Music and Visual Arts, out of the desire to find both common points and to create the possibility for young researchers to meet, to know the directions and concerns in the field of arts research and to realize on future teams. Both the Conference and the resulting volume of articles are aimed at international openness, being published on international databases. Therefore, the impact would be important and not limited to the local perimeter. Editorial Board List Editor-in-ChiefProfessor PhD habil. Abstract

Artists are everywhere, from celebrities showing at MoMA to locals hoping for a spot on a café wall. They are photographed at gallery openings in New York and Los Angeles, hustle in fast-gentrifying cities, and, sometimes, make quiet lives in Midwestern monasteries. Some command armies of fabricators while others patiently teach schoolchildren how to finger-knit. All of these artists might well be shown in the same exhibition, the quality of work far more important than education or income in determining whether one counts as a "real" artist. In The Work of Art, Alison Gerber explores these art worlds to investigate who artists are (and who they're not), why they do the things they do, and whether a sense of vocational calling and the need to make a living are as incompatible as we've been led to believe. Listening to the stories of artists from across the United States, Gerber finds patterns of agreements and disagreements shared by art-makers from all walks of life. For professionals and hobbyists alike, the alliance of love and money has become central to contemporary art-making, and danger awaits those who fail to strike a balance between the two. The stories artists tell are just as much a part of artistic practice as putting brush to canvas or chisel to marble. By explaining the shared ways that artists account for their activities-the analogies they draw, the arguments they make-Gerber reveals the common bases of value artists point to when they say: what I do is worth doing. The Work of Art asks how we make sense of the things we do and shows why all this talk about value matters so much.
