Abstract

It was Federico Chabod who recognized in Jean Bodin's theory of climate the merging, in the middle of the sixteenth century, of the «scattered seeds» of an essentially naturalistic idea of nation, still far from the modern conception of the nation as «a spiritual fact». Bodin (1529-1596) was one of the greatest exponents of French legal humanism. Reworking and updateing in his major works (Methodus, 1566; République, 1576-1586; Universae naturae theatrum, 1596) a long dating back theme, Bodin presented the characters of nations as dependent on climatic situations: the cold north with the torpid ingenuity of the inhabitants, the hot south with subtle ingenuity, and the middle zone of temperate nations. That theory, which soon became a stereotype until its reworking in Montesquieu's Esprit des lois, actually played a more decisive role in the genesis of the modern concept of nation, made visible for the first time, albeit in a symbolic and imaginary way.

Abstract

As a result of Abraham Ibn Ezra’s increasing popularity after his death, there were repeated waves of translation of collections of his Hebrew astrological treatises into Latin and into the emerging European vernaculars. A study of these versions affords us a golden opportunity to shed light on a significant missing link in our knowledge of Ibn Ezra’s astrological oeuvre. The present volume offers the first critical edition, accompanied by an English translation, a commentary, and an introductory study, of three Latin texts on the astrological doctrines of elections and interrogations, written by or attributed to Abraham Ibn Ezra: the Liber electionum , the Liber interrogationum , and the Tractatus particulares.

Abstract

Abstract

This text by (Ps.)Eratosthenes translated in this publication portrays a group of episodes not limited to 12 constellations. Nor does it discuss deterministic influences / constraints on daily, monthly, or annual contingencies and behaviours of the earthly creatures of the Alexandrian Era. Although it is not an astronomical treatise and the style has a simple and succinct character, much remains to be decoded in just over forty episodes. Of astronomical connotations, it presents itself as an approximation exercise, providing the receiver with explanations of something visible but not attainable - the constellations, through images of common knowledge, rooted in scenes and mythological aspects. In addition, the topoi are vast, such as philia, betrayal, anger, justice, crime and punishment, reverence, eponymia, etiology, metamorphosis, mythology.

Abstract

The Jewel of Annual Astrology is an encyclopaedic treatise on Tājika or Sanskritized Perso-Arabic astrology, dealing particularly with the casting and interpretation of anniversary horoscopes. Authored in 1649 CE by Balabhadra Daivajña, court astrologer to Shāh Shujāʿ – governor of Bengal and second son of the Mughal emperor Shāh Jahān – it casts light on the historical development of the Tājika school by extensive quotations from earlier works spanning five centuries. With this first-ever scholarly edition and translation of a Tājika text, Martin Gansten makes a significant contribution not only to the study of an important but little known knowledge tradition, but also to the intellectual historiography of Asia and the transmission of horoscopic astrology in the medieval and early modern periods.

Abstract

Abstract

"The Prison of Fire for Demons by Florian C. Reiter presents a study of Taoist exorcist devices that in Heavenly Masters Taoism in the past and even today are dispensable for exorcist rituals. It focusses on exorcism that mainly was performed for the individual client. Sometimes large-scale liturgies were required, but often less-demanding ritual efforts sufficed. The study relies on the collections A Corpus of Taoist Rituals and Pearls Inherited from the Sea of Rituals in the Ming Taoist Canon. Reiter presents an exorcist tradition of Thunder Magic Rituals from Hunan-province and another one from Sichuan province. The leading Thunder divinity in the latter tradition is Marshal T´ien-p´eng who is associated with the God-Emperor of the North and has a background in Shang-ch´ing Taoism. Reiter selects exorcist devices such as the Prison of Fire for Demons and various other types of demon-prisons. He also discusses the abundant amulets and seals for exorcist rituals, and presents the Divine Stick of T´ien-p´eng which is a small wooden ritual tool that today is still in use. The practice of submitting formal applications to the spirit Thunder administration to get the divine approval and backing for any specific exorcism is introduced as well. Reiter displays the historic frame for applying the exorcist devices and defines these practices as constituent elements of Heavenly Masters Taoism. All those methods and devices serve the salvation of individual clients and support society as a whole."--

Abstract

Abstract

This is the first commentary in any language on three of the books of ancient Greek astrological poetry ascribed to the Egyptian priest Manetho. Manetho, who became a figure for recondite wisdom, came to be credited with a series of didactic poems which list outcomes for planetary set-ups in a horoscope or birth chart. This book contends that we can learn a great deal from this material about the intellectual, cultural, social, and literary history of the world in which it was written—Hadrianic Egypt, and the second-century Roman Empire at large. Its descriptions of the kinds of person who are born under happy and unhappy configurations of stars speak to the lived realities, aspirations, and fears of the astrologer's clientele. Given astrology's enormous contemporary prestige, this means we are offered insights into the mental universe and values of the common man, l'homme moyen sensuel, that élite literature largely bypasses. The volume addresses current work on the emotions and popular ethics. It also brings to the fore a neglected witness to a type of imperial didactic poetry—functional, technical in content, and yet sharing a degree of artistrywith better-known poets such as Dionysius the Periegete. The Manethonian poems are placed in the context of other ancient astrological literature—much of it very different in idiom, complexity, and method—but also in the wider one of other divinatory texts, philosophical writing, and the novel. There is a Greek text with English translation and an apparatus with parallel material to enable comparison with related works.
