Sand et Flaubert, deux écrivains que tout sépare… En effet, en cette deuxième moitié du XIXe siècle qui assiste au déclin de la rhétorique classique, et qui, par réaction au subjectivisme débridé (initié par Rousseau), se fait le « policier » de la langue, Sand et Flaubert n´ont ni les mêmes rapports au monde ni les mêmes projets artistiques. Pourtant, tous deux se sont livrés, au fil des années, à une correspondance régulière et pressante à travers laquelle ils testent diverses stratégies, et que les outils de la pragmatique mettent particulièrement en évidence. L’un et l’autre lecteurs de Platon, pour qui le véritable dialogue va de soi à soi, Sand et Flaubert surchargent leurs lettres de méta-discours légitimant (et contre-légitimant) dans un mouvement qui se veut à la fois extérieur et intérieur, objectif et subjectif. Journaliste de son état, convaincue de l’utilité de l´écriture et de la lecture, Sand va dans le sens de la doxa en légitimant le lien entre discours social et discours littéraire. Flaubert, lui, qui s’abstient de participer au débat public, transforme la Correspondance en un espace de réflexions. Les deux écrivains trouvent toutefois dans l’échange épistolier un moyen pour dire, et en même temps, résorber leurs contradictions.

A magisterial account of how the cultural and maritime relationships between the British, Dutch and American territories changed the existing world order - and made the Industrial Revolution possible Between 1500 and 1800, the North Sea region overtook the Mediterranean as the most dynamic part of the world. At its core the Anglo-Dutch relationship intertwined close alliance and fierce antagonism to intense creative effect. But a precondition for the Industrial Revolution was also the establishment in British North America of a unique type of colony - for the settlement of people and culture, rather than the extraction of things. England's republican revolution of 1649-53 was a spectacular attempt to change social, political and moral life in the direction pioneered by the Dutch. Drawing on a wide and rich array of sources, this book explores the nature and extent of Dutch trade and commerce in the Río de la Plata during three decades of the least-studied century (1650-1750) of Spain's rule in the Americas. In doing so, it raises important questions about trade in colonial South America and how it was impacted by the Dutch, suggesting that these transactions were carried out within the confines of the law, contradicting common beliefs among scholars that this trading was not regulated. The book contributes to a growing literature on contraband trade, administration, networks, and corruption while challenging narratives of exclusively Spanish influence on the Americas.

"BORDERLESS EMPIRE explores the volatile history of Dutch Guiana, in particular the forgotten colonies of Essequibo and Demerara, in order to provide new perspectives on European empire building in the Atlantic world. It argues that imperial expansion was a process of improvisation at the colonial level, rather than a project that was centrally orchestrated from the metropolis. Furthermore, it emphasizes that colonial expansion was far more transnational than the oft-used divisions into "national Atlantics" suggest. It therefore aims to transcend the framework of the "Dutch Atlantic" by looking at the connections across cultural and imperial boundaries. This book tells a story of empire building as an Atlantic-wide process. Essequibo and Demerara remained remarkably open colonies, even as late as the end of the eighteenth century. But that is not to say they were unique: improvisation, and the consequent contacts across imperial borders were a general feature of early modern colonial ventures. By looking outwards from the colonies, rather than following the top-down view from the metropolis, BORDERLESS EMPIRE aims to bring these entanglements to the fore. Highlighting the contribution of many non-Dutch actors--such as Amerindian soldiers, North American provisions traders, and British slave smugglers--it reveals the truly Atlantic nature of empire building.
