Der Titel des Buches setzt die beiden Tätigkeitsfelder, das Bauen und das Schreiben, des Architekten, Architekturhistorikers und Theoretikers August Sarnitz in eine wechselseitige Beziehung: im Schreiben entsteht der Kontext zum Gebauten – so wie das Bauen im Kontext des Geschriebenen steht. Eben diesem Wechselspiel folgt auch der Aufbau des Buches: einem Essay über Architekturgeschichte und Big Data folgen drei Aufsätze zu den Themen Städtebau, sozialem Wohnbau und der Fiktion des Raums. Auch einige prägende Wiener Architekten treten auf: Frank, Kiesler, Hollein und Prix. Die Themen Wohnen, Design und Möbel werden mit eigenen Projekten von Sarnitz illustriert; am Ende widmet sich das Buch der Architekturfotografie, die für Sarnitz als Publizisten große Bedeutung hat. The title of the book sets the two fields of activity pursued by the architect, architectural historian and theorist August Sarnitz – building and writing – in a reciprocal relation: the context to what has been built emerges in the process of writing, just as the context to what has been written emerges in the process of building. The structure of the book follows precisely this reciprocity: an essay about architectural history and Big Data is followed by three on the topics of urban development, social housing, and the fiction of space. A number of influential Viennese architects appear as well: Frank, Kiesler, Hollein and Prix. The topics of housing, design and furniture are all illustrated with Sarnitz’s own projects; the end of the book is dedicated to architectural photography, which is especially important to Sarnitz in his capacity as publicist. The richly illustrated book is the first to document Sarnitz’s work as author, designer, exhibition designer, architect and photographer.

Neste livro analisam-se diferentes repertórios de atuação do Estado Novo no campo das obras públicas, da arquitetura ao urbanismo, passando pela intervenção em monumentos nacionais. Congregando vinte autores de distintas gerações e formações, pretende-se oferecer um ponto de situação, ainda que sempre parcelar e provisório, do conhecimento sobre os múltiplos programas desenvolvidos durante o regime, os quais tiveram, a diversas escalas, consequências na organização do espaço e do território português. Potenciar a sua leitura integrada constitui um dos principais objetivos deste volume. Em segundo lugar, visa-se evidenciar, acolhendo como vantajosa a existência de múltiplos posicionamentos analíticos, os denominadores comuns e os territórios de dissenso, os diferentes referentes teóricos e metodologias mobilizadas para compreender este objeto de estudo multifacetado. Rejeitando possíveis leituras unívocas, a materialização deste retrato poliédrico da historiografia nacional procura, antes, contribuir para (re)imaginar um horizonte de investigação, idealmente transdisciplinar, comparativo e colaborativo.

Eine utopische Vision aus der Krisenzeit nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg wiedergelesen: Seit Sommer 1918 hatte Bruno Taut politische und vor allem sozialistisch geprägte Texte gesammelt. Auszüge aus Aufsätzen zu Stadt- und Bodenfragen, insgesamt 82 Seiten, bereitete er so auf, dass sie zusammen mit 30 eigenhändigen Zeichnungen die Erdoberfläche als eine 'gute Wohnung' für alle Menschen beschreiben. Voraussetzung dazu war seiner Ansicht nach die Eliminierung aller Städte und Staaten. Tauts Ziel war es, die Konsequenzen einer gleichmäßigen Verteilung der Menschen unter den Bedingungen eines glücklichen, aus innerer Notwendigkeit jedes Einzelnen entstehenden Bedürfnisses zu zeigen. Das Buch sollte seine Leser zu Reflexionen befähigen, 'auf das hin, was in der Gegenwart beim Bau neuer Siedlungen zu beachten ist.' Ihren unbegrenzten Formenreichtum könnte man fast vegetabil und biologisch nennen. Mitgedacht sind hier Konzepte für Verkehrsplanung, Energieversorgung und Selbstversorgertum. Mit Textauszügen von Friedrich Engels, Gustav Theodor Fechner, Friedrich Hölderlin, Pjotr Kropotkin, Gustav Landauer, Wladimir Iljitsch Lenin, Friedrich Nietzsche, Novalis, W. H. In recent decades, the drawing practices in landscape design and urbanism have seen a number of transformations. Current developments in theory and practice have rendered the distinction between the two more diffuse. Both disciplines are no longer regarded as architecture - or gardening - 'on a larger scale', primarily anchored in questions of housing, land development or embellishment. Today ecology, energy transition or 'metabolic' issues are much more present, which leads to new forms of drawing. Leaving an object-oriented thinking behind, both disciplines seem to be convinced of the importance of the process and the impact of the factor of time. Space has become understood as an intersection - a 'coagulation' - of a multiplicity of flows and processes. For designers it is an essential question how all these flows and processes come together, materialize, and become visible, and how their 'spatialization' in drawings is represented in analysis and design. The design and the drawing seem to be torn between a process-oriented agenda and a spatial intervention whose success depends on disciplinary expectations of care, materiality and intrinsic aesthetic qualities. Sustainable design not only presupposes a bold solution to the problem, but must also be beautiful, empathic and affective. What role does the drawing play - from cartography to sketch? Which traditions offer starting points? What innovations are needed?
