Marcel Dzama (1974 Winnipeg, Canada. Lives and works in New York) has developed an immediately recognizable visual language that investigates human action and motivation, as well as the blurred relationship between the real and the subconscious. Drawing equally from folk vernacular as from art-historical and contemporary influences, Dzama?s work visualizes a universe of childhood fantasies and otherworldly fairy tales. Dzama?s image repertoire includes a wide range of art-historical quotations. One can recognize ballet costumes by Oskar Schlemmer or Francis Picabia, for example, and direct references to Francisco de Goya, Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Beuys. However, it?s not just elements from the past that spur Dzama?s creativity. The music enthusiast has collaborated with various colleagues from the beginning of his career, whether as part of the Royal Art Lodge in Winnipeg, which he co-founded, or in the form of collaborations with Arcade Fire, Bob Dylan, Beck, Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), the filmmaker Spike Jonze, the actress Amy Sedaris, the ensemble of the New York City Ballet, or fellow artists like Raymond Pettibon and Jockum Nordström. In his work Beuys love a girl who plays guitar he brings together the artist Joseph Beuys with the country-singer Dolly Parton. For the exhibition at the Tim Van Laere Gallery he started a series of drawings with more hopeful themes, more serene. ?Because the Trump years were so traumatizing.? says Marcel Dzama. ?Also I usually either do political drawing or I go for this kind of vacation feeling. Almost idyllic. A lot of them are based on photographs taken of my son and wife on vacation. I am still playing with this.

The universe of Friedrich Kunath is carefully balanced around dichotomies. His paintings address the greater questions in life, bringing viewers into a disruptive state of searching for meaning in life while realizing the ridiculousness of this quest. The artist?s personal journey from East to West Berlin and on to his new-found home in Los Angeles presented him with a wide variety of source material ranging from the canon of art history and German philosophy to the idiom of kitsch and the make-believe world of Hollywood and LA. Many of these materials are impacted by two poles ? the culture of wisdom and pop culture ? to the point of obsession and even, at times, systematization. Dealing with such universal themes of human existence as love, loss, optimism, vulnerability and melancholy, he employs a variety of media, from painting, sculpture, drawing, video and photography to expansive installations, all provided with a tragicomic pathos and dreams of possibilities. In almost every work, there is a tangible realization that the world is a spectacle of unfulfilled dreams in which the rawness of life is fled through the parallel universe of pop culture.

Adrian Ghenie has risen to be one of the most important contemporary painters. His unique style is characterized by a remarkable wealth of pictorial fragments with a flowing and hallucinatory spatial arrangement that results in a collage-like gathering of distinct pictorial motifs, a hedonistic sensuality, and an innovative, radical and eclectic interpretation of the most diverse subjects. When you enter his exhibition at Tim Van Laere Gallery, you instantly feel the sheer energy and movement radiating from his paintings. His subjects seem chosen to fit his painterly ambition to pursue dynamic compositions charged with energy and theatrical qualities. His visual language is entirely his own, built on earlier conversations led in art history by artists with a similar interest in dynamic compositions and energetic gestures in painting, such as the baroque painters and the abstract expressionists. For instance, he demonstrates expert mastery of baroque chiaroscuro, but also of the gestural use of paint, such as drips, scrapes and splatters, which are key signatures of abstract expressionism.
