In this volume, thirteen of the world's leading scholars of medieval France explore some of the most important ideas, events, personalities, and artistic creations of the Capetian world (987-1328). From some of the earliest medieval attempts to make narrative treatments of French history, through the invention of the schools, the creation of Gothic architecture, the practices of chivalry, the practice of statecraft, and the promulgation of law codes, the volume offers a panoramic view of the kingdom and the era that has come to define the medieval world in both the scholarly and popular imaginations. The scholars brought together in this volume share as well a common sense of gratitude and an intellectual debt to Elizabeth A. R. Brown, whose own rigour and brilliance has inspired their work and shaped their sense of the past. Political Ritual and Practice in Capetian France is both a tribute to a scholar of real accomplishment and a collection of original scholarship raised upon on the foundations that Elizabeth A. R. Brown herself set down.

"'Palestinian Traditional Pottery' stands out, first and foremost, as a scholarly testimony to the disappeared and disappearing craft of traditional pottery making by Palestinian women and men potters. It offers a contribution that has been long awaited and is long overdue. The material it provides, both textual and pictorial, is based on field research completed in the 1970s by two very different, yet complementary, researchers and authors. For various reasons, this material lay dormant over four decades until it was retrieved and returned to the light of day. The occasion for the creation of the volume was the death in 2017 in the U.S. of one of the authors, John Landgraf. Fortunately, the other author, Owen Rye in Australia, had most of the written material still in his possession, which was then digitized, arranged, and edited. The graphic material, especially the black and white - and beautiful color - photographs, taken by the two authors, was also gathered and cataloged for use in the book. The photographs of the women potters are particularly poignant, since they date to the final decade of their pottery making activity. Assembling and producing the book required months of painstaking collaborative work by the editors and the layout artist, with results that are worthy of their efforts. This volume invites readers into the two distinct worlds of Palestinian women and men potters at work in the 1970s: the women in or outside their village homes, and the men in their mostly urban workshops. With Palestinian culture under siege, the scholarship presented here aims to record and preserve a key part of that culture. It stands out equally as a memorial volume for John Landgraf, who lived in Jerusalem from 1965 to 1980, dedicating himself to archaeology, ethnography, and social work." --

This book investigates political, economic and social links between top-down decentralisation strategies and neopatrimonial elite networks in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Over ten years since 2011, several MENA regimes have initiated decentralisation processes, but empirical observations suggest a gap between the formal layout and the outcome of decentralisation. The authors identify neopatrimonial networks as an explanatory factor in this respect. A comparative study of Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt (1) looks at decentralisation from the perspective of the periphery, (2) examines decentralisation within neopatrimonial contexts, (3) includes fiscal policy and informal financial flows, and (4) analyses the international donor perspective. With contributions by Sylvia I. Bergh, Miriam Bohn, Thomas Demmelhuber, Roland Sturm and Erik Vollmann.

This book investigates the multifaceted nature of change in today’s Nordic Arctic and the necessary research and policy development required to address the challenges and opportunities currently faced by this region. It focuses its attention on the recent efforts of the Nordic community to create specialized Centers of Excellence in Arctic Research in order to facilitate this process of scientific inquiry and policy articulation. The volume seeks to describe both the steps that lead to this decision and the manner in which this undertaking as evolved. The work highlights the research efforts of the four Centers and their investigations of a variety of issues including those related to ecosystem and wildlife management, the revitalization resource dependent communities, the emergence of new climate-born diseases and the development of adequate modeling techniques to assist northern communities in their efforts at adaptation and resilience building. Major discoveries and insights arising from these and other efforts are detailed and possible policy implications considered. The book also focuses attention on the challenges of creating and supporting multidisciplinary teams of researchers to investigate such concerns and the methods and means for facilitating their collaboration and the integration of their findings to form new and useful perspectives on the nature of change in the contemporary Arctic. It also provides helpful consideration and examples of how local and indigenous communities can be engaged in the co-production of knowledge regarding the region. The volume discusses how such research findings can be best communicated and shared between scientists, policymakers and northern residents. It considers the challenges of building common concern not just among different research disciplines but also between bureaucracies and the public. Only when this bridge-building effort is undertaken can true pathways to action be established. .
