International health security (IHS) is a broad and highly heterogeneous area. Within this general context, IHS encompasses subdomains that potentially influence (and more specifically endanger) the well-being and wellness of humans. The general umbrella of IHS includes, but is not limited to, natural disasters, emerging infectious diseases (EID) and pandemics, rapid urbanization, social determinants of health, population growth, systemic racism and discrimination, environmental matters, civilian violence and warfare, various forms of terrorism, misuse of antibiotics, and the misuse of social media. The need for this expanded definition of health security stems from the realization that topics such as EID; food, water, and pharmaceutical supply chain safety; medical and health information cybersecurity; and bioterrorism, although important within the overall realm of health security, are not only able to actively modulate the wellness and health of human populations, but also tend to do so in a synergistic fashion. This inaugural tome of a multi-volume collection, Contemporary Developments and Perspectives in International Health Security, introduces many of the topics directly relevant to modern IHS theory and practice. This first volume provides a solid foundation for future installments of this important and relevant book series.

Information on, and investigation of, the epidemiology and methods of vector-borne diseases is usually incorporated only sparsely into books about the epidemiology of infectious diseases. The most generally accessible sources are the WHO's annual malaria guidelines and annual World Malaria Reports. In contrast, the details and findings of research are found in specialist journals, and explain the minute details of a particular situation. This book is designed for people who need to investigate the sources of disease, and report their findings. Although it references hundreds of peer-reviewed studies, it presents the procedures that can be used by vector control and epidemiologists in straightforward language. It also makes mention of, and references, new and novel techniques that are currently being developed for investigations. The book begins with an explanation of what is required to conduct vector-borne disease epidemiology, and why the focus of prevention is the biting insects and arthropods. It also shows how the environment is the main unit of investigation in this regard, and explains techniques for developing a comprehensive and linked surveillance system and for detecting a disease prior to the infection of a human index case.

Pandemic, health crisis, climate risk after decades of stressing natural capital because of overexploitation of resources and moreover increasing socio-economic inequalities are considered by many scholar to cause a tipping point in the evolution of bio-physical and socio-technical processes on a global level. In light of the systemic interdependencies of a hyper-connected world, the scenario of a global systemic crisis does not appear unlikely. We can try to avoid it by taking on new strategic priorities and mindset, then defining theoretical imperatives and application criteria. In this perspective, an example is the paradigm shift represented by the passage from the so-called shareholder capitalism to the stakeholder capitalism.
