Ḥāwī l-Funūn (Encompasser of the Arts) of Ibn al-Ṭaḥḥān (d. ca. 1057) is a medieval Arabic music dictionary that complements other sources because of the practical knowledge of the author who was an accomplished singer, lutenist and composer. The first part in 80 chapters deals with compositions; voice production and characteristics, unison and duet singing, taking care of the voice; preludes, ornaments, ṭarab; the importance of tonality; approaches to teaching; musical and extra-musical behavior at the court; names of Syrian Fatimid and Ishshīdid singers. The second part in 22 chapters includes lute manufacturing, frets placement, stringing and tuning; 47 rhythmic ornaments, names and definitions of rhythmic and melodic modes; types of dances; descriptions of 12 instruments.

André Girard (1860-1942), compositeur de musique puis correcteur, travailla dans la presse anarchiste et fut notamment le collaborateur de Jean Grave, qui dirigeait Les Temps nouveaux. Il contribua au Révolté et à La Révolte, à l'Action sociale, à l'Art social, aux journaux de Sébastien Faure le Libertaire et Ce qu'il faut dire, il fut aussi rédacteur en chef de l'Avenir international... On avait oublié qu'il avait été également le bras droit de Maurice Lachâtre, qu'il fut le principal rédacteur du Dictionnaire-Journal et le secrétaire de rédaction du Dictionnaire La Châtre. Il publia de rares brochures, Anarchie, Éducation et autorité paternelle, L'Enfer militaire ou Anarchistes et bandits. Le courant dont se réclame Girard est clairement éducationnel. Il participa à Jean- Pierre et aux Petits Bonshommes, deux journaux destinés à la jeunesse. Les textes réunis ici sous la forme d'un dictionnaire ont paru dans le Dictionnaire-Journal, entre 1894 et 1899. Ces notices développées concernent aussi bien l'actualité anarchiste de cette fin de siècle mouvementée que les théories de l'anarchie. Ces textes nous permettent de partager les idées émancipatrices de cette fin de XIXe siècle, lesquelles trouvent un écho étonnant dans les réflexions post-capitalistes de notre début de XXIe siècle. --
