This book examines the psychology involved in handling, and responding to, materials in artistic practice, such as oils, charcoal, brushes, canvas, earth, and sand. Artists often work with intuitive, tactile sensations and rhythms that connect them to these materials. Rhythm connects the brain and body to the world, and the world of abstract art. The book features new readings of artworks by Matisse, Pollock, Dubuffet, Tápies, Benglis, Len Lye, Star Gossage, Shannon Novak, Simon Ingram, Lee Mingwei, L. N. Tallur and many others. Such art challenges centuries of philosophical and aesthetic order that has elevated the substance of mind over the substance of matter. This is a multidisciplinary study of different metastable patterns and rhythms: in art, the body, and the brain. This focus on the propagation of rhythm across domains represents a fresh art historical approach and provides important opportunities for art and science to cooperate.

"Minding Bodies aims to help instructors improve their students' knowledge and skills through physical movement, attention to the spatial environment, and sensitivity to humans as more than "brains on sticks." It shifts the focus of adult learning from an exclusively mental effort toward an embodied, sensory-rich experience, offering new strategies to maximize the effectiveness of time spent learning together on campus as well as remotely. Minding Bodies draws from a wide range of body/mind research in cognitive psychology, kinesiology, and phenomenology to bring a holistic perspective to teaching and learning"--

Moving Relation explores the notion of touch in the realm of contemporary dance.By closely analyzing performances by well-known European and American choreographers such as Meg Stuart, William Forsythe, Xavier Le Roy, Jared Gradinger and Angela Schubot, this book investigates their usage of touch on the level of movement, experience and affect. Building on the proposition that touch is more than the moment of bodily contact, the author demonstrates the concept of touch as an interplay of movements and multiple relations of proximity. Egert employs both depth, using close descriptions and analyses of dance performances with theoretical investigations of touch, with breadth, working across the fields of performance and dance studies, philosophy and cultural theory.Suitable for scholars and practitioners in the fields of dance and performance studies, Moving Relation uses a process-oriented notion of touch to reevaluate key concepts such as the body, rhythm, emotional expression, subjectivity and audience perception. “This book makes an extraordinarily timely contribution to the field of dance studies, through articulating the kinaesthetic awareness that contemporary dancers cultivate in their professional practice. Artfully synthesising previous scholarly research concerning the embodied knowledge of contemporary dancing subjects, Ehrenberg proposes exciting new ways of conceptualising the intra-action between dancers and the ubiquitous technology supporting dancemaking processes. A highly engaging and impactful read, it points to important new directions in dance and related research fields.” -Dr Jenny Roche, Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Dance, University of Limerick, Ireland “This book offers an invaluable insight to how dancers respond to and speak about the tension they may experience between the ‘felt-sense’ of their dancing and their visual image. As such it provides new understandings about how dancers experience being watched. By combining dancer commentary with a range of theories as diverse as feminist philosophy, post-structuralism and posthumanism, the book adeptly conceptualises and interrogates the concept of a ‘kinaesthetic mode of attention’ for contemporary dance.” -Professor Sarah Whatley, C-DaRE, Coventry University, UK Kinaesthesia and Visual Self-reflection in Contemporary Dance features interviews with UK-based professional-level contemporary, ballet, hip hop, and breaking dancers and cross-disciplinary explication of kinaesthesia and visual self-reflection discourses. Expanding on the concept of a ‘kinaesthetic mode of attention’ leads to discussion of some of the key values and practices which nurture and develop this mode in contemporary dance. Zooming in on entanglements with video self-images in dance practice provides further insights regarding kinaesthesia’s historicised polarisation with the visual. It thus provides opportunities to dwell on and reconsider reflections, opening up to a set of playful yet disruptive diffractions inherent in the process of becoming a contemporary dancer, particularly amongst an increasingly complex landscape of visual and theoretical technologies. Shantel Ehrenberg is a practitioner/researcher/academic. Her research and practice focus on the complexity of the corporeal. She is Lecturer in Dance & Theatre at the University of Surrey, UK. Her research is also found in publications such as Choreographic Practices, Dance Research Journal, and Research in Dance Education.
