Abstract

Abstract

"Peter Faber was one of the original companions who, with Ignatius of Loyola, founded the Society of Jesus in 1534. From his simple upbringing in a mountain village to his years at university, Faber exhibited a mind for learning and a heart for prayer. After doing Ignatius' Spiritual Exercises -- an intense retreat for deepening one's commitment to Christ and friendship with God -- Faber led others to do the same and soon earned a reputation as the best teacher of the Exercises. But it was a time of great dissention, as the Church struggled to respond to the challenges of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. Battle lines were drawn -- in churches and conversations, at meetings and councils. Along with other Jesuits, Faber sought to help people keep the faith. In exploring Peter Faber's life of conversation, we can learn a powerful and faithful response to dissent, disagreement, and division -- for his time and ours." -- from publisher.

Abstract

The Abel Distinctions' translates the first edition of Peter the Chanter's innovated 'symbol dictionary' from the late twelfth century. Peter the Chanter was a master at Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris in the late 12th century. Among his many works is 'The Abel Distinctions', an alphabetized collection that treats key words by 'distinguishing' their various symbolic meanings in accordance with the traditions of biblical exegesis. The work was innovative in form and deeply conservative in content. Of special use to preachers who would shape a sermon around such sets of distinctions, it also appealed in general to clerics and laity interested in biblical meaning and allegory. 'The Abel Distinctions' may have been the first collection of its kind; it spawned dozens of imitators through the next two centuries and more. Its immense popularity and influence is indicated by its nearly ninety extant manuscripts. The source text of this volume appeared in 'Corpus Christianorum. Continuatio Mediaeualis' as Petrus Cantor, 'Distinctiones Abel' ('CCCM', 288-288A). References to the corresponding pages of the 'Corpus Christianorum' edition are provided in the margins of this translation.

Abstract

Abstract

The sermons here published for the first time are attributed to an otherwise unknown friar referred to simply as Frater Petrus. The collection provides evidence of actual preaching in a normal setting from fourteenth-century Germany, between the beginnings of the Franciscan order and the Observant reform movement, not by a major light of the order, but a regular member who may have held status as an intermediate-level teacher, to judge by the care with which the manuscripts were prepared. Theologically competent and gracefully presented in the conventional sermon style of the period, the collection, edited and translated by Daniel Nodes, offers scholars and students a reliable new resource in an area of sermon studies that is still in short supply.

Abstract

This book, one of four devoted to Rubens’s portraiture, contains a catalogue of all the portraits of unidentified individuals attributed by Ludwig Burchard or by the authors to Rubens and executed in Antwerp. The volume thus complements the catalogue of all the portraits of known persons painted by Rubens in Antwerp, published in the Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard as Part XIX.2 in 1987. A decade earlier the volume on the portraits painted by Rubens outside Antwerp (XIX.1) had inaugurated the series on Rubens’s portraits. In 2016, the book dealing with Portraits after Existing Prototypes (XIX.4) also appeared, so that now the cataloguing of Rubens’s entire oeuvre in the field of portraiture is complete. Not all the works discussed in the present book (XIX.3) are, however, portraits of unidentified sitters – initially the volume’s title. Recent scholarly research has not only allowed insights into sitters previously unrecognised, but has indeed made it possible to give an identity to a number of persons portrayed in works that were not included in the second volume (XIX.2). Among these sitters are members of Rubens’s own family, as well as his contemporaries, including significant figures in the political, economic or religious life of the period.

Abstract

"Peter Chrysologus is the first book to offer an introduction to the life of Peter Chrysologus and a selection of his most important sermons in translation, as well as his letter to Eutyches. Bishop Peter of Ravenna preached before the imperial family for nearly two decades (c. 430-450) after the imperial capital was moved to Peter's See of Ravenna in 402 by Emperor Honorius. With the Empire's elite directly before him, Peter also had the problems of fifth century Monophysitism behind him. As such, his homilies stress the incarnate Christ's ability to change lives by reuniting mortal humans with their life-giving God. The thorough introduction explores the figure of Peter, beginning with the obscure biographies telling of his early life, to his becoming Metropolitan of Ravenna, situating his elevation in the wider socio-political context of the powerful court of Valentinian III and the 5th century Roman West. It also looks at the significant influence his legacy had on future generations. Translated into a modern idiom, this collection of sermons makes the preaching and pastoral wisdom of this key figure accessible to modern readers. It is an invaluable tool for anyone working on early Christian theology and the early Church, as well as students of late antiquity and the western Empire"--

Abstract

John-Christian Eurell studies how Peter's authority is portrayed to create legitimacy in Christian texts. Peter emerges as a central figure in the diverse early Christian movement and is used to discuss theological legitimacy. The main divide is between those who argue that legitimate theology should have a conservative point of departure based on traditional material handed down from the earthly Jesus and an apostolic succession based on interpersonal relations and those who argue in favour of a more progressive point of departure which places emphasis on contemporary charismatic experiences. These perspectives are utilised by groups of various theological persuasions to argue their own position. Peter is seen as a positive and negative example for both these ways of creating legitimacy.
