Abstract

The OECD initiated the Resourcing Higher Education Project to support member countries in narrowing the gap between domestic decision-making about resourcing issues in higher education and international evidence on the subject. The project seeks to do this by analysing policy approaches that affect the mobilisation, allocation and deployment of financial and human resources in higher education and sharing lessons learned about the effects of these approaches. The Flemish Community of Belgium was one of the first OECD jurisdictions to participate in a review of higher education resourcing. This report presents the findings and recommendations emerging from this review.

Abstract

"Renowned as a leading practitioner and voice of wisdom and reason, Annie Grant now shares her insight with those who are still on their professional journey within the higher education student experiential services through her writing. I commend this book to everyone who works in, or wants to really understand, the world of higher education in the UK today." -Jayne Aldridge, Chairperson of AMOSSHE, The Student Services Organisation 2017-2021, and Director for the Student Experience, University of Sussex, UK This book examines the aspirations, challenges and experiences of contemporary university students through the eyes and ears of those who provide professional advisory services. Providing an overview of the growth of the UK higher education sector in general and that of student advisory provision in particular, the author highlights the breadth and depth of the role that professional advisory staff now play in the higher education landscape. The volume addresses student academic and career success and their wellbeing, stressing the importance of understanding and respecting the diversity of the student body. In doing so, it emphasises the value of envisioning universities as inclusive and safe communities that challenge discrimination, prejudice and bullying, and the importance of proactive initiatives that help students to develop self-confidence and resilience. The author addresses other important but less frequently discussed matters, such as the impact of the marketization of higher education, alcohol and drug abuse and the ethical and moral values of higher education. Annie Grant is a freelance researcher and writer, and Associate of Newnham College Cambridge, UK. Following a successful career as a published researcher and teacher in her specialist field, her work with students led to her decision to shift her focus to student guidance and support. .

Abstract

This book is the first authoritative, in-depth publication about global midwifery and the contribution of skilled professional midwives to the provision of high quality maternity care, reductions in maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity. It demonstrates actions that are contributing to the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals through partnership with women and their families, enabling them to 'survive, thrive and transform'. The book explores how the world is becoming more connected through globalisation, advances in technology and innovation and yet more inequitable as women and children are disproportionately affected by issues such as poverty, environmental vulnerability, hunger, conflict, violence, and discrimination. It considers how midwives contribute to maternal and newborn health, leading to greater equity and empowerment and, ultimately, strengthening health systems. The 'three pillars' of midwifery are discussed: regulation, education and professional midwives' associations. The importance of evidence-based care is explored along with different models of midwifery and the challenges of developing professional leadership. This book also considers women's human rights to sexual and reproductive health and respectful maternity care, stressing the importance of cultural sensitivity and contextually appropriate approaches. Midwives and other professionals will benefit from this reliable resource that indicates direction and provides information about the principles and practice of professional midwifery. This text also provides universities, organisations, and individuals with a highly relevant resource to better equip them for international midwifery practice. It finally offers policy makers a reliable source of evidence-based information for consideration in various evolving national and international situations. .

Abstract

This book introduces readers to the basics of Advanced Practice Nursing (APN), which offers expanded clinical competence that can help improve the quality of health and care services. The book offers a range of perspectives on APN, APN models, APN education, challenges in the implementation of APN in new countries, as well as a description of the APN role, including areas of expertise. These core areas of the Caring APN model (clinical nursing practice; ethical decision-making; coaching and teaching; consultation; collaboration; case management; leadership; research and development) are described, together with the role of APN in acute care and primary healthcare service contexts. The book also explores the connection between epistemology, a three-dimensional view of knowledge (epistêmê, technê and phronesis) and a caritative perspective, as well as central theoretical aspects of nursing, e.g. health, holism and ethics/ethos. All research should be grounded in theoretical perspectives, and here we highlight the value of a caring and person-centered philosophy in advanced practice nursing. Through its specific focus on the central, generic theoretical features of nursing science that deepen the role of APN and the scope of practice and APN research and education, the content presented here will help any researcher, teacher or student understand the importance of epistemological issues for research, education and clinical practice in this field. Moreover, it can be used when designing Master's programs in Advanced Practice Nursing, making the book a valuable resource for the international nursing community.
