Abstract

"To date, much of the application of IRT has been in the field of educational measurement, where for example, IRT has been used extensively by the Educational Testing Service for the development of scholastic aptitude tests. IRT has played a major role in all major college and graduate school admission tests (SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, MCAT, ...). Unlike traditional tests based on classical test theory that summarizes the test result by a simple counting operation of number of correct responses, IRT provides model-based measurements in which the difficulty of the items, discrimination of high and low levels of the underlying latent variable(s) and the corresponding ability of the respondents can be estimated. In IRT scoring of tests, a certain number of items can be arbitrarily added, deleted, or replaced without losing comparability of scores on the scale. Only the precision of measurement at some points on the scale is affected. This property of scaled measurement, as opposed to counts of events, is the most salient advantage of IRT over classical methods of educational and psychological measurement. The evolution of IRT is now going beyond educational measurement. Recent advances in multidimensional extensions of IRT and computerized adaptive testing are leading to major advances in patient reported outcome measures of physical and emotional well being. In mental health research, IRT is now leading to a major paradigm shift in the screening and measurement of mental health disorders, substance abuse and suicidality, one of the leading causes of death in the world. Multidimensional IRT extends the tools used to evaluate essentially unidimensional constructs such as mathematical ability to the measurement of complex traits such as depression, anxiety and psychosis. In the next five years we expect that the use of multidimensional IRT for the measurement of complex traits will extend to other areas of health sciences and to problems in marketing research and practice where rapid adaptive tests administered through the internet will be able to precisiely measure consumer affinity for different products, events, and market sectors. The methods described in this book will provide the foundation for these future developments"--

Abstract

Abstract

"Research on the auditory brainstem implant (ABI) has evolved from a highly specialized, narrow field to one involving a wide spectrum of disciplines. Neurotologists, audiologists, otolaryngologists, and neurosurgeons are on the front lines of treatment, while many other specialists play active roles. Auditory Brainstem Implants by renowned ABI experts Eric P. Wilkinson and Marc S. Schwartz is the first dedicated book on ABIs published to date. The state-of-the-art monograph brings together a rich array of materials and resources from an impressive group of pioneering clinicians and researchers from around the world. The text starts with introductory chapters encompassing the history and development of ABIs; relevant neuroanatomy and physiology; imaging of the cochlea, cochlear nerve, brainstem, and auditory system; and clinical indications for ABIs. Surgical chapters detail translabyrinthine, retrosigmoid, and retrolabyrinthine approaches, pediatric applications, auditory midbrain implants, device-specific engineering, and intraoperative monitoring. Auditory testing, performance variables, and results are also reviewed. The final chapters focus on innovative future directions, such as penetrating multisite microelectrodes and the use of optogenetics"--

Abstract

"Biomaterials have existed for millennia as mechanical replacement structures following disease or injury. Biomaterial design has changed markedly from structural support with an "inert" immune profile as the primary objective to designs that elicit an integrative local tissue response and a pro-repair immune cell phenotype. Immunomodulatory Biomaterials: Regulating the Immune Response with Biomaterials to Affect Clinical Outcome offers a single, comprehensive reference on biomaterials for modulation of the host response, for materials scientists, tissue engineers and those working in regenerative medicine. This book details methods, materials and strategies designed to regulate the host immune response following surgical implantation and thus facilitate specific local cell infiltration and tissue deposition. There has been a dramatic transformation in our understanding of the role of the immune system, both innate and adaptive; these changes include recognition of the plasticity of immune cells, especially macrophages, cross-talk between the immune system and stem cells, and the necessity for in situ transition between inflammatory and regulatory immune cell phenotypes. The exploitation of these findings and the design and manufacture of new biomaterials is occurring at an astounding pace. There is currently no book directed at the interdisciplinary principles guiding the design, manufacture, testing, and clinical translation of biomaterials that proactively regulate the host tissue immune response. The challenge for academia, industry, and regulatory agencies to encourage innovation while assuring safety and maximizing efficacy has never been greater. Given the highly interdisciplinary requirements for the design, manufacture and use of immunomodulatory biomaterials, this book will prove a useful single resource across disciplines."

Abstract

Aggregated data from mobile network operators can provide snapshots of population mobility patterns in real time, generating valuable insights when other more traditional data sources are unavailable or out of date. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the value of remotely collected, high-frequency, localized data in inferring the economic impact of shocks to inform decision making. However, proper protocols must be put in place to ensure end-to-end user confidentiality and compliance with international best practice. This paper demonstrates how to build such a data pipeline, for the case of The Gambia, channeling data from mobile network operators through the national regulator to the analytical users, who in turn produce policy relevant insights. The aggregated indicators analyzed offer a detailed snapshot of the decrease in mobility and increased out-migration from urban to rural areas during the COVID-19 lockdown. Recommendations based on lessons learned from this process can inform engagements with other regulators in creating data pipelines to inform policy making.
