Joan Miró. De essentie van voorbije en aanwezige dingen is het eerste belangrijke overzicht in België van Miró's artistieke productie in meer dan 65 jaar. De tentoonstelling verkent het werk van de Catalaanse kunstenaar, parallel met zijn traditionele artistieke vorming en zijn levenslange verhouding tot de kunst van het verleden. Deze actieve belangstelling omvatte primitivisme, romaanse kunst, de Italiaanse en Nederlandse renaissance, Japanse schilderkunst en kalligrafie, en de Hollandse Gouden Eeuw, maar ook modernistische stromingen zoals fauvisme en kubisme. In het licht van Miró's intentie om de schilderkunst te 'vermoorden' (zoals hij zei in 1927) - zijn zoektocht om de poëtische werkelijkheid over te brengen via absolute vrijheid, en de traditionele esthetiek en coventionele schildermethodes uit te dagen - verkent deze publicatie zijn voortdurend evoluerende relatie met (veeleer een loslaten van) de kunst van het verleden, waardoor ons begrip van zijn werk als geheel wordt verrijkt. Deze fraaie catalogus, die Miró's hele carrière overspant, bevat meer dan 150 kleurenreproducties van zijn artistieke werk. Daarvan werden voor deze tentoonstelling 100 stukken uitgeleend door prestigieuze internationale openbare en privéverzamelingen. Hij bevat eveneens reproducties van een rijke selectie van kunsthistorische boeken, prentbriefkaarten en objecten die aan Miró zelf toebehoorden, net als museumprentbriefkaarten die de kunstenaar tussen de laten jaren 1910 en de vroege jaren 1930 naar vrienden stuurde. Via dit alles kan de lezer de diepe intellectuele verfijning en de nauwkeurige werkprocessen ontdekken die aan de basis lagen van een van de grootste oeuvres uit de vroeg twintigste eeuwse kunst.

In The Pliable Plane, curator and historian Penelope Curtis traces the ways sculpture infiltrated architectural thought over the post-war period. Her study identifies the wall as a particular locus of creative thinking – a surface which produces both continuity and separation, and which similarly unites and distinguishes the two disciplines. Surveying a series of walls – carved, cast, applied, imagined, and even conceptual – in such places as bomb shelters, caves, war memorials, and public buildings, Curtis introduces a cast of renowned and lesser-known practitioners who defined the three-dimensional conception of the years 1945 to 1975.With close readings of the work and lives of Henry Moore, Anni Albers, Frederick Kiesler, Jorge Oteiza, and Mary Martin, among others, Curtis’s lucid history encom­passes the developments of wartime production, the discovery of the Lascaux Caves, and the rise of relief art. Turning away from familiar pairings and dichotomies, it considers spaces and surfaces of coalescence and influence. Curtis compels us to understand the wall as support as much as partition, arguing for the centrality of this very pliability to the entwined development of both sculpture and architecture.

Eind jaren 1970, in navolging van de 'Brancusiaanse revolutie', begint Didier Vermeiren (Brussel, 1951) het vraagstuk van de sokkel centraal te stellen in zijn reflectie, door te werken aan de complexe relatie die de beeldhouwkunst heeft met haar traditionele element van presentatie. Dit was het begin van een 'onderzoek naar de sokkel en naar het heden', waarbij de sokkel voor Vermeiren een autonome sculpturale bestemming krijgt. Wat voor hem van belang is, is de relatie tot de vloer, tot de ruimte en tot de plaats, maar ook tot de geschiedenis van de beeldhouwkunst. Vanaf het begin is fotografie eveneens een belangrijk instrument voor zijn plastische dynamiek. Deze dubbele artistieke praktijk resulteert tot op heden in sculpturen die foto's creëren en foto's die sculpturen creëren. Dit boek, naar een concept van Didier Vermeiren, begeleidt de retrospectieve Double Exposition die hij presenteert in WIELS, Brussel, van september 2022 tot januari 2023. Het bevat talrijke beelden uit zijn fotografisch archief.

Conceived in close collaboration with the artist, the exhibition at MO.CO. (Montpellier Contemporary) brings together some sixty works produced between 1999 and 2022. Exploring all his favourite media (sculptures, installations, drawings, watercolours and collages), it takes over the entire space. The selection includes six new works created specifically for MO.CO.Although martyrdom, redemption and metamorphosis are well-known themes in Berlinde De Bruyckere’s work, the exhibition also focuses on lesser-known aspects such as eroticism, the relationships and hybridisations of human, plant and animal, and the notions of work and exploitation.Berlinde De Bruyckere’s exhibition is accompanied by a richly illustrated catalogue published for the occasion in French and English. The graphic design was entrusted to the studio Tout va bien. It includes previously unpublished contributions by the South African writer and poet Antjie Krog and Numa Hambursin, general director of MO.CO., as well as an interview between the artist and the curators, Vincent Honoré, Anna Kerekes and Rahmouna Boutayeb.
