Abstract

Thanks to high-performance composite structures made of wood and steel or concrete, wooden buildings are now being erected far beyond the high-rise boundaries. An end to the increase in altitude is hardly in sight. Wooden constructions are also on the uptrend in residential and office construction, sports halls, industrial buildings and bridges. They are the epitome of sustainable building and, thanks to new prefabrication processes, are also competitive in terms of construction costs. The book shows the current development of structural planning with wood on the basis of around 20 outstanding engineering structures. The engineers involved in the planning describe the conception of the supporting structures as well as individual solutions for their implementation.

Abstract

Hybrid construction of reinforced concrete and wood combine the advantages of solid construction with those of wood construction and thus represent an optimal construction option. Wood is eco-efficient and high degrees of prefabrication ensure an upscale quality standard and enable implementation without scaffolding, which in turn promises economic benefits. Concrete offers proven and cost-effective supporting structures for all building classes with common concepts of building technology and fire and sound insulation. The publication shows detailed solutions for the successful implementation of structural engineering and building physics requirements for hybrid construction, especially with regard to noise and fire protection. Project examples document comprehensively the successful implementation in practice.

Abstract

Wood is the building material of the 21st century. Understanding this material and its potential requires us to recognize its ecological, technological and cultural-historical contexts. Touch Wood explores this potential, with inspiring examples―both practical and visionary―from the US, Japan, Austria, Norway, Switzerland and elsewhere. Aimed at an engaged audience of both experts and laypersons who aspire to enrich their experiences with knowledge and thus become actors in the promotion of wood in architecture, this book documents various exemplary buildings in accessible texts and with numerous illustrations. Touch Wood also illuminates the many relationships that connect people with wood as a material. Authors from various disciplines supply a framework in which wood can be experienced sensually and its possibilities and limitations can be discussed.

Abstract

Abstract

"Over the last three decades, timber architecture has seen a resurgence in popularity thanks to the level of innovation, experimentation and environmental responsiveness it engenders. Designing Timber Buildings offers a comprehensive overview of timber as a construction material, in addition to practical design guidance. A series of ten exemplary case studies of award-winning timber building from around the world inform and inspire the design process. Topics covered include: the physical and mechanical properties of wood; preservative treatments; modified timber and engineered-timber products; environmental aspects of timber buildings and finally, structural systems and constructional techniques, including timber frame, structural insulated panels and cross-laminated timber. This book is richly illustrated throughout with detailed drawings and photographs documenting projects from construction to completion."

Abstract

"The recipient of the 2014 Pritzker Prize in architecture, Shigeru Ban remains one of the most innovative architects. A pioneer in the use of sustainable materials, Ban is the most visible proponent of wood and bamboo in contemporary architecture, and nearly fifty new buildings and projects are featured in this latest volume of his work. Despite being one of the oldest building materials, wood is revolutionizing the way we design and construct buildings today. Criteria such as a changing work-life balance and working for a carbon-neutral future allow us to better account for the resources that buildings use and their effect on the natural environment. Studies have also shown the positive impacts of wood on health, wellness, and working toward equity in our local communities as we create beautiful spaces in which to gather, learn, and live. Featured in this book is a comprehensive survey of more than fifty buildings showcasing novel applications for this most ancient of building materials. Museum projects, corporate headquarters, resorts, residences, and temporary shelters for both natural and man-made disasters display the state of the art in wood construction, especially the emerging technology of mass timber, a fireproof composite material. Featured projects include the headquarters of Swatch and Omega, as well as the Aspen Museum, the Pompidou Metz, the Mount Fuji World Heritage Center, La Seine Musicale Performance Hall in Paris, the Oita Prefectural Museum, and the nineteen-story Terrace House in Vancouver, the world's tallest mass timber building, scheduled for completion in 2022"--
