Abstract

This short book elaborates on selected aspects of stochastic-statistical dependencies in multivariate statistics. Each chapter provides a rigorous and self-contained treatment of one specific topic, poses a particular problem within its scope, and concludes by presenting its solution. The presented problems are not only relevant for research in mathematical statistics, but also entertaining, with elegant proofs and appealing solutions. The chapters cover correlation coefficients of bivariate normal distributions, empirical likelihood ratio tests for the population correlation, the rearrangement algorithm, covariances of order statistics, equi-correlation matrices, skew-normal distributions and the weighted bootstrap. This book is primarily intended for early-career researchers in mathematical statistics, but will also be interesting for lecturers in the field. Its goal is to rouse the reader's interest, further their knowledge of the subject and provide them with some useful mathematical techniques.

Abstract

This book aims to provide an overview of crucial aspects related to the interconnection between the political economy of energy security and national security, which is of great importance globally due to high volatility and complexity. In this book, contemporary energy issues in relation to the energy security are examined, along with main vulnerabilities and challenges that have appeared lately with an impact beyond country borders and with a particular focus on the Eastern Mediterranean region. Energy security is studied on both International and European level and finally the Eastern Mediterranean region with special reference to the countries of the State of Israel and the Republic of Cyprus. The rapidly changing geopolitical environment makes energy security one of the critical areas of immediate interest that need a holistic approach. The importance of energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean region is constantly growing and requires the proper vision to enhance security in the region. Energy is now linked to the issues of sustainable development and tackling climate change, which is also taken into account. Finally, this book is expected to contribute to the existing literature and provide an in-depth study that gives a fresh approach to the academic and political community. Floros Flouros is an Assistant Professor in International Political Economy: Energy, Environment and Climate Change at the University of Neapolis Pafos, Cyprus.

Abstract

Handbook of Energy and Environmental Security educates the reader about the wider dimensions of the distinctive yet intertwined subjects of ‘energy security and ‘environmental security’. The book uniquely addresses these two increasingly important topics in a comprehensive and composite manner, describing the concepts and wider dimensions of energy- and environmental security in technological, economic, social and geopolitical perspectives. Divided into three main parts, the book deals with the subject of energy security in terms of its concepts, broader dimensions and allied issues, focuses on environmental security, and covers subjects in a cohesive manner, discussing their important interfaces and commonalities.

Abstract

"Heroin is an illustrated history of Canadian heroin regulation over two centuries. Through the lens of harm reduction, Susan Boyd points to our failure to address the illegal overdose death epidemic caused by criminalizing drug users and to the decades of resistance to these policies. Heroin, discovered in 1898, was heralded as an important medicine and successfully marketed as a pain reliever and cough suppressant. Until the early 1950s, heroin was prescribed for therapeutic use in Canada. Yet, illegal heroin use became the focus of drug prohibition advocates and law enforcement who painted it as highly addictive and destructive. Systemic racism was the impetus for our first anti-heroin laws. The race, gender and class of users influenced drug control which, by the 1930s, became the focus of law enforcement. Flawed ideas about heroin and people who used the drug shaped drug law and policy for decades--and continue today. The book is informed by documentary evidence and the experiences of people who use/used heroin, drug user unions, and harm reduction advocates. These sources highlight the structural violence of drug policy that uses prohibition and criminalization as the main response to drug use."--
