"By the late Middle Ages, manifestations of Marian devotion had become multifaceted and covered all aspects of religious, private and personal life. Ze werd nog geen dertig jaar. Maar wat ze schreef, is nog steeds een bron van inspiratie voor miljoenen. Haar dagboeken en brieven, die over de hele wereld werden vertaald en gepubliceerd, spreken nog altijd onverminderd tot de verbeelding. Maar wie was Etty Hillesum eigenlijk? Welke vrouw gaat schuil achter de mythe die anderen vaak van haar maakten? Judith Koelemeijer volgde het spoor ver terug. Zij werkte de afgelopen jaren intensief aan de voltooiing van een meesterlijke biografie, gebaseerd op diepgravend onderzoek in binnen- en buitenland. Zij reisde van Westerbork naar Amerika, van Israël naar Polen, interviewde tal van mensen en deed vele verrassende ontdekkingen in archieven en op zolders. "This volume contains the proceedings of an international conference on the relation between asceticism and aspirations about reaching for perfection held at the University of Leuven 21-23 October 2019 and organised in the framework of Kosmoi, an association of Leuven colleagues from various disciplines working in the field of religious studies. Contributors were asked to integrate in their essay (aspects of) one of the following four basic topics: (1) the goal and purpose of living an ascetic life; (2) the means, both material and immaterial, available for reaching this goal; (3) the place of asceticism within the whole of religious practices in a particular religious tradition; and (4) the challenges and dangers of adopting such a lifestyle. These topics are addressed in various religious traditions, with a focus on Christian tradition - Western and Eastern, and through various approaches - historical, anthropological, and more philosophical."

In deze tijden van oorlog, in Europa en daarbuiten, is dit boek van Thomas Merton actueler dan ooit. Hij schreef het in 1962 toen de Koude Oorlog op zijn hoogtepunt was en het uitbreken van een kernoorlog waarschijnlijk leek. Hij beschrijft hoe het christendom vanaf de begintijd tot in de 20e eeuw over oorlog heeft gedacht. Het door Augustinus geïntroduceerde begrip ‘rechtvaardige oorlog’ speelt daarin een cruciale rol. Merton bespreekt morele dilemma’s ten aanzien van oorlogs- en vredesvraagstukken vanuit de christelijke moraal, die sinds de Eerste Wereldoorlog steeds minder relevant lijkt te zijn geworden voor politieke besluitvorming. Ook het handelen van mensen die zich christen noemen staat vaak op gespannen voet met het evangelie. Omdat het christendom voor velen slechts een façade is geworden spreekt Merton van het na-christelijk tijdperk.Zijn orde verbood publicatie van Mertons boek, omdat het niet passend was dat een monnik zich met dit soort zaken bezighield. Het pas in 2004 uitgegeven boek verschijnt nu voor het eerst in een Nederlandse vertaling. --
