Abstract

The Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ANUBiH) continuously monitors and studies the development of science and the state of the innovation system in the country. The latest contribution to this process is the international conference “Science System - a Factor of Stimulation or Limitation in Development”, organized by the Department of Social Sciences. Data from statistical institutes in Bosnia and Herzegovina, all available international studies and analyses, answers of Bosnia and Herzegovina to primary and supplementary questions on science from Chapter 25 of the European Commission, medium-term development plans of various levels of state organization and ANUBiH research results, including the latest “Harmonization of the Science System in Bosnia and Herzegovina”, show that scientific research and technological-development work in Bosnia and Herzegovina are stagnating in the absolute sense, and regressing in relative sense. The title of the conference is based on this conclusion. Our studies confirm that the main reasons for the unsatisfactory state of science and technological development in Bosnia and Herzegovina are the absolutely insufficient funding, and a polycentric and atrophied innovation system.

Abstract

Otud svaka rasprava o izborima i izbornim pravilima zaokuplja pažnju političke i intelektualne javnosti. Papića), iskustvene (radovi B. Borić i V. Šehića). Omogućilo je to iznošenje različitih stavova i pogleda što i jeste cilj ovakvih simpozija: sagledati temu iz raznih znanstvenih perspektiva i iznijeti različita mišljenja.

Abstract

This book provides insights for both native language teachers and local language teachers alike who conduct team-taught lessons by revisiting the topic of foreign assistant language teachers (ALTs), the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) program, and team teaching. This book is innovative in that (a) it is the first to elucidate ALTs’ experiences comprehensively, across both historical time (i.e., prior to, during, and after the JET program) and social space (i.e., inside and outside the school), thereby revealing their multiple identities that they come to construct and reconstruct over time, and (b) it explores the meanings and perspectives of particular phenomena that ALTs experience within their specific social settings from their own individual points of view. This inquiry does this by using personal narrative accounts gathered from multiple participants. Through these narrative accounts, Hiratsuka formulates a conceptualization of ALT identity, an effort that has hitherto been neglected. As a consequence, this book offers several practical and empirical applications of the conceptualization to future endeavors involving native language teachers and those who engage with them, including the key stakeholders of local language teachers, their local boards of education, the governments, and language learners across the globe.

Abstract

“The US-China relationship is the critical driving force of contemporary world order, and public diplomacy is a vital tool for creating better understanding and reducing tensions between the two powers. Based on original research, this book is not only an important contribution to the academic literature on public diplomacy, but also an invaluable guide for analysts and policymakers in explaining why US cultural and education programs have had limited success, and how to improve them.” - Amitav Acharya, Distinguished Professor, American University, USA This book aims to understand public diplomacy by examining its practice. In particular, it focuses on the implementation of educational and exchange programs by the US Departments of State and Defense toward China. Implementation is the focal point of this study and is utilized both as a practical process and a methodology. It refers to the process of translating a public diplomacy policy goal—the specific order given to a governmental institution in order to achieve a general foreign policy objective—into public diplomacy practices and impact. In addition, it refers to a research method that centers implementation and accepts the prerequisite of discretion from studies of policy implementation. This book maps out where and by whom implementation discretion is exercised in public diplomacy. It argues that public diplomacy is in the eye of the beholder, and that its meanings can vary significantly according to different actors. Di Wu is Assistant Professor at Tongji University, China. Her research sits at the intersection of foreign policy and strategic communication, with geographic interests in China and the US. Wu has published on soft power, public diplomacy, and US-China relations.

Abstract

This book enriches the discourse around Global Citizenship Education in teacher education through the example of a teacher's experience in a Canada-China Sister School reciprocal learning landscape. Instead of positioning global citizenship teaching and learning as a set of fixed goals to be attained by teachers alone, this book approaches global citizenship teaching and learning as unfinished lifework in progress and as situated curriculum problems to be inquired together by university researchers, school teachers, and students under the spirit of reciprocity and community. This reimagination of narratives, theory, and action start from collaborative and reciprocal learning partnerships among Chinese and Canadian researchers and teachers in the practicality of re-searching and re-enacting the purpose and meanings of twenty-first century education in a Canada-China Sister School setting. Yishin Khoo is Sessional Lecturer at the University of Windsor, Canada. She received her PhD from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, Canada. Her research agenda focuses on the frameworks, mechanisms, and implications of intercultural reciprocal learning in global citizenship and sustainability education. .
