Since the mid-1990s, when China allowed its architects to practice independently from government-run design institutes, a new kind of architecture, distinguished by unique regional characteristics, has emerged. China Dialogues is a rigorously selected collection of insightful interviews that the book?s author Vladimir Belogolovsky has conducted with 21 leading Chinese architects during his extensive travels in China. At the time when so many buildings that are being built around the world are no longer rooted in their place and culture, the leading Chinese architects succeeded collectively in producing unique architectural body of work that could not be confused with any other regional school. The interviews are accompanied by over 120 photographs and drawings of beautifully executed projects built throughout China since early 2000s. China Dialogues opens up the thinking process of the country?s top architects, as they share their ideas, insights, intentions, and visions in unusually revealing and candid ways.

Het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen (KMSKA) kreeg tijdens een elf jaar durende renovatie een grondige make-over. Er staat een museum dat in alle opzichten nieuw is: er kwam een gloednieuw museumvolume, het historische gebouw straalt weer, de gevel is gerestaureerd en de tuin heraangelegd. KMSKA ? Het Schoonste Museum belicht die grootschalige renovatie en focust ook op een tweede grootscheepse vernieuwing: de hele werking van het museum is up-to-date gebracht. In previous decades, architectural production was constrained by the limits of technology; architects pushed on the boundaries imposed by technology and it gave them common purpose. Those limits are gone. Over the preceding two decades it has been demonstrated that with enough technology (and money) anything is possible. What does an architect do when anything is possible? This is the question which confronts architects today, who now operate within a professional landscape where all is possible, but little has meaning. The “anything goes” mentality which currently prevails has resulted in innumerable self-referential “object” buildings which engage only with their architect’s ego, often resulting in an urban fabric of autonomous formal objects comprised of arbitrarily-applied design tropes which celebrate formal invention for its own sake. But what do architects leave society once the novelty of form has worn off? In this architectural age of arbitrary shape-making, devoid of context or meaning, Out of the Ordinary proposes an architecture of innovation rising from ordinary concerns, about relationships not form, which exposes new spatial relationships with diagrammatic clarity in a process of distillation what seeks to lay bare meaningful relationships between essential building elements.

Homosexuality still is a taboo subject in architectural history. When historical architectural personalities have lived outside the heterosexual norm, their private lives are readily shrouded in mysterious obscurity. As long as penal laws endured, social existence was constantly threatened and hiding was a necessity. Defensive strategies were needed to protect themselves. To track down these outsiders of the past, historical sources must be read queerly.Wolfgang Voigt, until 2015 deputy director at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) in Frankfurt/Main, and architectural historian Uwe Bresan set out on their search and present the results of their research in this book. It brings together 41 portraits from the 18th to the 20th century in North America, Europe and Palestine. The book reveals architects from the Baroque era to the modern age, surprising biographies, admirable houses and, not infrequently, intelligently designed refuges with which the protagonists protected their private lives.

Architectuur wordt vandaag geconfronteerd met maat­schappelijke omwentelingen die alsmaar moeilijker te negeren zijn. Het woonvraagstuk, kantelende visies op onderwijs, het collectieve verleden, openbare ruimte en nieuwe zorgbehoeften zijn thema's die met de dag urgenter worden. De aarzelende respons hierop plaatst het (interna­tionale) succes van architectuur uit Vlaanderen en Brussel in perspectief. Het Architectuurboek Vlaanderen N°15.
