Abstract

"Since 1814 Sweden has avoided involvement in armed conflicts and carried out policies of non-alignment in peacetime and neutrality during war. Even though the Swedish government often describes Sweden as a 'nation of peace', in 2004 the 200-year anniversary of that peace passed by with barely any attention. Despite its extraordinary longevity, research about the Swedish experience of enduring peace is underdeveloped. 200 Years of Peace places this long period of peace in broader academic and public discussions surrounding claimed Swedish exceptionality as it is represented in the nation's social policies, expansive welfare state, eugenics, gender equality programs, and peace"--

Abstract

There is a strong story about how the humanities were marginalized in post-war Sweden: in the land of engineers, technocrats and social scientists, there was no room for education, philosophy and history. This book challenges such a notion and shows how clearly present the humanities were in the public eye at the time. By taking a knowledge-historical perspective, the authors illustrate how humanists were in the middle of the welfare society's culture and politics, media and book market, debate of ideas and education. At the center of the book is the public of the 1960s and 1970s. In the first part, it is highlighted how humanists played a decisive role in the young television's education program as well as in the popular science paperback publication of the time and on the essay pages of newspapers. In a second part, attention is drawn to the place of the humanities in the Christian cultural sphere, the work of educating the labor movement and the book cafes of the new left. We get to meet people like Per I. Gedin, Gunnel Vallquist and Jan-Öjvind Swahn, but also TV producers, study circle organizers, translators of radical non-fiction and several others. They all contributed to setting humanistic knowledge in motion during the post-war decades. Against an international background, the image of a humanistic knowledge system emerges with deep roots and wide branches in Swedish society. It is about these actors and arenas of knowledge that this book is about.

Abstract

Abstract

"The first scholarly monograph in English to focus on the African and Black diaspora in Sweden, Afro-Sweden emphasizes the voices, experiences, practices, knowledge, and ideas of these communities. Its interdisciplinary approach to understanding diasporic communities is essential to contemporary conversations around such issues as the status and identity of racialized populations in Europe and the international impact of Black Lives Matter"--

Abstract

A grand overview of people's thoughts in Sweden about nature, society and what it is to be human, from ancient times to the Renaissance. With concrete examples and an elegant language, the reader gets to penetrate back in time to wonderful and alien worlds of thought. Previous works on the subject have their origins in the Middle Ages and were based on the learned, written culture. David Dunér, professor of the history of ideas and learning, tries a new approach here by following the history of thinking and ideas as far back as there have been people in Sweden. Not only the great thinkers are illuminated here, the author also examines how people throughout history tried to understand the world around them. Why would one start thinking about things at all? It made the world more comprehensible and easier to live in, but also bigger, stranger and more wonderful. Here the interplay between thought and the outside world is described and explained, including the environmental, technological and social changes that drove new ideas - from cultivating the land to expressing thoughts in petroglyphs and runes, the introduction of written culture and Christianity, and finally the art of printing and the disruptive change of the Reformation on thinking. David Dunér is breaking new ground in the history of Swedish ideas with this standard work which is not only based on the very latest research, but is also the most complete on the subject.
