The aims of the Women in Architecture Berlin 2021 festival were to make female architects visible, provide them with a platform and a voice, and to showcase their achievements. Institutions, associations, and initiatives in the field of building culture were all encouraged to take part. Seventy years after the death of Emilie Winkelmann, the first successful female German architect, the organizers wanted to consider the current status of women in architecture: Who are the strongest female players in the building sector today? Are they being acknowledged? What is the state of equality in building culture and how does the profession need to be modified? This publication highlights what political, teaching, and commercial institutions, managers and employees, university leaders and professors can do—and in some cases have already done—to promote equality on the building site.

Julia Morgan was truly a pioneer of her time—among other accomplishments, she was the first woman architect to be licensed in California, in 1904. Through her remarkable life and legacy, this book celebrates the Beaux-Arts architecture of California. Focusing on Morgan’s most famous project in the state, Hearst Castle, to which she devoted more than 30 years of her life, this volume also examines, for the first time, Morgan’s fabulous early buildings in the style. Morgan designed more than 700 buildings across California, many of which are designated landmarks today. Deepening the reader’s understanding of California archi-tecture, this book also places into context Morgan’s ambitions, her influences and inspirations, as well as her daily practice and challenges as a woman shaping an extraordinarily prolific and highly successful career in a man’s world. To better understand the Beaux-Arts training Morgan underwent in Paris, the reader is taken through the challenging, highly arduous Ecole des Beaux-Arts curriculum, which Morgan completed, a lone woman among men. Also explored, in detail, is the story of how the studio and kilns of California Faience, a Berkeley ceramic artisan’s shop, became the supplier of tens of thousands of tiles designed by Morgan and overseen by Hearst himself to decorate their architectural master-piece overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Not enough research has been conducted on the pioneering work of Austria’s female architects and, as a result, many of them remain in relative obsurity. Most were members of ZV Österreich, until 1959 Austria’s main guild of freelance architects. It is therefore worthwhile delving into the archives of the ZV. This publication is dedicated to these women, documents their names, and presents their lives and careers as examples. The international work of these women ranges from homes to churches and factories, interior design and urban planning, and even extends to the construction of power plants.

According to a recent American study, sexism and racism are so widespread in architecture that there is a distaste for these topics within the branch itself. What are the reasons for this exclusionary working culture? Even in Germany, most architecture graduates since the turn of the millennium have been female—but a large number of conventions and assumptions within the discipline make it difficult for women to remain in the profession. As a result, a great deal of highly trained talent is lost. Black Turtleneck, Round Glasses uses an intersectional feminist perspective to examine the structural causes that push women—and anyone else who isn’t a white cis man—out of the field. How can architectural teaching and discourse, as well as the industry’s self-image, become more diverse? Where are the experiences of a pluralistic society missing from the built environment? How can we bring about cultural change in planning and architecture?

The Women who changed Architecture chronicles the pioneering women worldwide who have shaped architecture since the late nineteenth century. Women have long been underrepresented in architectural history books, perpetuating the notion that the profession is solely the domain of men. The Women who changed Architecture is a critical step toward correcting the record, highlighting such accomplished practioners as Marion Mahony Griffin, the first woman to receive an architecture license in the United States, in 1894, and Frank Lloyd Wright's longtime lead designer ; Llly Reich, whose pivotal work in the design of the world-renowned Barcelona Pavilion was credited to Mies van der Rohe ; and Anne Griswold Tyng, who played an instrumental role in the design of the interior of Louis Kahn's Yale University Art Gallery and Design Center, considered solely his masterpiece.

In the late 1960s, the feminist scholar Kate Millet broadly defined »politics« as arrangements of power which enable individuals collectively to assert authority over others. Taking this definition, case studies by scholars from Europe and Israel explore the gendered professional in the 20th century as she navigated arrangements of power-including organised religion, emancipation movements, cultural norms, and shifting forms of government-to practice architecture. Additional contributions reflect upon power structures in contemporary architectural education, practice, and history to propose other means of architectural knowledge, representation, and professional activity.

From the bustle of Johannesburg to the neon of Las Vegas, Denise Scott Brown’s advocacy for "messy vitality" has transformed the way we look at the urban landscape. Unconventional, eloquent, and with a profound sociopolitical message, Scott Brown is one of our era’s most influential thinkers on architecture and urbanism. The anthology Denise Scott Brown. In Other Eyes – marking the 50th anniversary of the seminal treatise Learning from Las Vegas – paints a portrait of Scott Brown as seen through the eyes of leading architectural historians and practitioners. It features new scholarship on her education on three continents, her multidisciplinary teaching, and her use of urban patterns and forces as tools for architectural design – a practice documented in a new comment by Scott Brown, noting that sometimes.

Making Space, first published in 1984, is a pioneering collection of essays which challenges us to look at how the built environment impacts women's lives. It exposes the sexist assumptions on gender and sexuality that have a fundamental impact on the way buildings are designed and our cities are planned. Written collaboratively by the feminist collective Matrix, the book provides a full blown critique of the patriarchal built environment both in the home and in public space, outlining alternative forms of practice that are still relevant today. It remains a landmark book highlighting the possibilities of a feminist future. This updated edition comes with a new foreword examining the context, process and legacy of Making Space written by two leading feminists in architecture.
