Disability in Africa has received significant attention as a dimension of global development and humanitarian initiatives. Little international attention is given, however, to the ways in which disability is discussed and addressed in specific countries in Africa. Little is known also about the ways in which persons with disabilities have advocated for themselves over the past one hundred years and how their needs were or were not met in locations across the continent. Kenya has been on the forefront of disability activism and disability rights since the middle of the twentieth century. The country was among the first African states to create a legal framework addressing the rights of persons with disabilities, namely the Persons with Disabilities Act of 2003. Kenya, however, has a much longer history of institutions and organizations that are dedicated to addressing the specific needs of persons with disabilities, and substantial developments have occurred since the introduction of the legal framework in 2003. Disability and Social Justice in Kenya: Scholars, Policymakers, and Activists in Conversation is the first interdisciplinary and multivocal study of its kind to review achievements and challenges related to the situation of persons with disabilities in Kenya today, in light of the country's longer history of disability and the wide range of local practices and institutions. It brings together scholars, activists, and policymakers who comment on topics including education, the role of activism, the legal framework, culture, the impact of the media, and the importance of families and the community.

Die Disability Studies sind ein international etabliertes, anspruchsvolles und innovatives Forschungsfeld, in dem es darum geht, das Phänomen "(Nicht-)Behinderung“ als historische, soziale, politische und kulturelle Konstruktion zu fassen, es somit aus der medizinisch-pädagogischen Umklammerung zu lösen und unter einer genuin sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Perspektive zu untersuchen. Ähnlich den Gender Studies oder Queer Studies handelt es sich bei den Disability Studies um einen Ansatz, der eine emanzipatorische Zielrichtung verfolgt. Das Handbuch führt in den internationalen Diskurs ein und bietet einen fundierten Überblick über die Entwicklung, Grundlagen und Debatten der deutschsprachigen Disability Studies. Die Aufsätze behandeln zentrale theoretische, methodische und empirische Fragen aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen sowie intersektionale und querliegende Perspektiven der Studien zu "dis/ability“. Das Handbuch eignet sich insbesondere als Nachschlagewerk für Forschung und Lehre.

Anstalten und Schulen für »schwachsinnige« Kinder nutzten ein »Aufschreibesystem«, das sich in Form von Krankenakten in den psychiatrischen Kliniken seit dem 18. Jahrhundert entwickelt hatte. Jona Tomke Garz untersucht interdisziplinär die Probleme der Diagnostik des »kindlichen Schwachsinns« mit Fokus auf den damit verbundenen Wissenspraktiken. Am Beispiel der Stadt Berlin wird die Entstehung und Entwicklung der Krankenakte im Kontext der Anstalt bis hin zum Personalbogen für Hilfsschulen verfolgt. Der Fokus auf die Wissenspraktiken des Personalbogens ermöglicht eine Wissensgeschichte des »kindlichen Schwachsinns« jenseits disziplinärer Grenzen.

The study of the Middle Ages in every aspect of the modern liberal arts-the humanities, STEM, and the social sciences-has significant importance for society and the individual. There is a common belief that the peoples of the past were somehow exempt from (positive, especially) human nature, had less of a sense of morality (by any definition) than we do now, or were unaware of basic human dilemmas or triumphs. Relegating the Middle Ages to 'primitive' distances us from close examination of what has not changed in society-or what has, which might not be for the better. Exploring and exploding these (mis)conceptions is essential to experience the benefits of a liberal education.
