Abstract

This volume explores the interconnected social, sustainable and spatial principles that underpin the design of more environmentally conscientious buildings and places, illustrated through models, drawings and images of selected key projects by the award-nominated London-based architecture practice Mæ. Each project outlines beneficial strategies for creating more sustainable designs, achieving social equity and working within our planet's limits to elevate the human spirit in the long-term. This book posits strategies to design buildings and places that enrich culture and society, offering insight from researchers and practitioners, as well as richly illustrated documentation of key architectural schemes that put these principles into practice. It is a call to arms for ways to create more environmentally regenerative architecture, applying its ideas to architectural practice worldwide.

Abstract

Is the world better off with your building? In 99.9% of cases the answer is 'No'. Almost every building pollutes the air, water, soil and damages biodiversity. What if we turned that around and focused on making a positive contribution? If buildings purify the air, water and soil, create biodiversity and generate more energy than we use? Then we will heal the world with our buildings. What Unilever's Paul Polman describes for companies in the book Net Positive, Vincent van der Meulen describes in Building with a Positive Footprint for the construction industry. The book offers an accessible explanation on how you can build in a radically sustainable way and declares why this is not yet happening. It provides a new method with practical leads, tools and insights to get started yourself, and especially with your team and partners. This book is a must-read for professionals involved in the creation of a building and unites all stakeholders around this sustainable ambition. Vincent van der Meulen is an architect and partner at Kraaijvanger Architects. He wrote this book based on his own experiences, driven by his desire to radically accelerate the sustainability of the construction industry.

Abstract

This edition of the book 'Urban green-blue grids for sustainable and dynamic cities' is a revised and updated reprint of the handbook by Hiltrud Pötz en Pierre Bleuzé.'Urban green-blue grids for sustainable and dynamic cities' is a visionary, practical and inspiring book for education and practice. Useful for developers, urban planners, landscape architects, ecologists, civil engineers and all those interested in making cities more sustainable and liveable.Half of the earths’ inhabitants live in cities, and urbanisation is only increasing. The quality of our future thus depends on the quality of our cities. Our challenge is to keep our cities and our planet liveable, safe, healthy and attractive throughout this century. Due to climate change, increasing urbanisation and the depletion of fossil fuels, cities will need to undergo a more or less gradual transition from being primarily consumers of food toward producing their own.One attractive and efficient way to guide this necessary transformation is by developing green-blue urban grids that will mitigate the effects of climate change and the energy and food shortages in urban areas. Our cities need to become more resilient to be able to tackle these challenges, as a lack of resilience will not only lead to a deficiency in technical infrastructural functioning but will also have consequences for a city’s social and economic well-being.Furthermore, green-blue urban planning will offer more room for the development of biodiversity and a healthier, more attractive living environment. This book shows the principles of sustainable urban planning and many substantial measures. About forty realized and international example projects in green-blue and sustainable urban planning demonstrate the feasibility of the principles and measures.

Abstract

"Circular Building and Circular Economy presents concepts, methods and examples of circularity in construction and the economy. Urban mining and circular construction are two approaches to the challenges that architecture and urban design are facing, using techniques such as mono-material construction and design for disassembly, and tools such as materials passports and databases. The circular economy is not solely about recycling but encompasses a wide range of strategies from local community projects to new ownership and service models and steering mechanisms such as carbon fees and dividends" [Publisher]

Abstract

Abstract

While building with reused components has become one of the most widely noted phenomena in the European architectural discourse in recent years, it is only slowly finding its way into the everyday practice of architects. Whenever components that can last for decades are not destroyed but reused for new buildings, this not only saves resources. It also drastically reduces energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions during the construction phase. Circular construction brings with it a whole range of questions, howeverranging from technical and energy-related to legal ones. This applies even more so today, although the practice itself can look back on a long tradition across history. This book is a comprehensive compendium on the topic of reuse in construction that, in addition to the theoretical discourse, also looks at the various practical questions by using a concrete example: the head-end building K.118 on the Sulzer Areal in Winterthur, which is the largest building in Switzerland built primarily with reused components to date. Since 2018, an interdisciplinary research project has evaluated this pilot project with regard to the architectural-constructive, energy-related, economic, procedural and legal aspects involved in its construction. The texts and graphic materials collected in this book present the findings of this study in a highly informative and visually striking way.
