Abstract

Structural engineering and architecture are both closely related to creative design. Both disciplines are diverse and different but there is a close interaction between the two as they both shape the primary elements composing a building. Reinforcing a transdiciplinary approach and emphasizing the overlap between structural engineering and architecture can significantly increase the quality of a project. Belgian engineers Ney & Partners have been fortunate to be entrusted with this role by their clients, architects and contractors who share the believe that buildings should only be designed through a collaborative process. Based on a selection of building projects, this book aims to illustrate what is possible whenan intensive dialogue between all the parties involved leads to an integrated design og building structures.

Abstract

This multidisciplinary collection investigates the ways in which marriage and partner migration processes have become the object of state scrutiny, and the site of sustained political interventions in several states around the world. Covering cases as varied as the United States, Canada, Japan, Iran, France, Belgium or the Netherlands, among others, contributors reveal how marriage and partner migration have become battlegrounds for political participation, control, and exclusion. Which forms of attachments (towards the family, the nation, or specific individuals) have become framed as risks to be managed? How do such preoccupations translate into policies? With what consequences for those affected by them, in terms of rights and access to citizenship? The book answers these questions by analyzing the interplay between issues of security, citizenship and rights from the perspectives of migrants and policymakers, but also from actors who negotiate encounters with the state, such as lawyers, non-governmental organizations, and translators.

Abstract

Abstract

This book brings together a group of essays, a photo series, and a catalogue of selected projects of Miami's 1980s architecture--some built, some unbuilt. The text and the accompanying images celebrate a period in American architecture when, in Miami, the subtropical nexus of the Americas, art and architecture were intensely interconnected, and Miami architects were partaking in the discipline's international discourse. Triggered by the case of The Babylon, Arquitectonica's first building, which after having been designated as a protected landmark in 2016 was in 2019 sadly demolished, Charlotte von Moos's research was driven by a sense of urgency about today's lack of care for such remarkable projects.

Abstract

Mammalian ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters constitute a superfamily of proteins involved in many essential cellular processes. Most of these transporters are transmembrane proteins and allow the active transport of solutes, small molecules, and lipids across biological membranes. On the one hand, some of these transporters are involved in drug resistance (also referred to as MDR or multidrug resistance), a process known to be a major brake in most anticancer treatments, and the medical challenge is thus to specifically inhibit their function. On the other hand, molecular defects in some of these ABC transporters are correlated with several rare human diseases, the most well-documented of which being cystic fibrosis, which is caused by genetic variations in ABCC7/CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator). In the latter case, the goal is to rescue the function of the deficient transporters using various means, such as targeted pharmacotherapies and cell or gene therapy. The aim of this Special Issue, “ABC Transporters in Human Diseases”, is to present, through original articles and reviews, the state-of-the-art of our current knowledge about the role of ABC transporters in human diseases and the proposed therapeutic options based on studies ranging from cell and animal models to patients.

Dear John : love and loyalty in wartime America

Abstract

Are 'Dear John' letters lethal weapons in the hands of men at war? Many US officers, servicemen, veterans, and civilians would say yes. Drawing on personal letters, oral histories, and psychiatric reports, as well as popular music and movies, Susan L. Carruthers shows how the armed forces and civilian society have attempted to weaponize romantic love in pursuit of martial ends, from World War II to today. Yet efforts to discipline feeling have frequently failed. And women have often borne the blame. This sweeping history of emotional life in wartime explores the interplay between letter-writing and storytelling, breakups and breakdowns, and between imploded intimacy and boosted camaraderie. Incorporating vivid personal experiences in lively and engaging prose - variously tragic, comic, and everything in between - this compelling study will change the way we think about wartime relationships.
