Abstract

The word 'intertwingled' was coined in 1960 by the American sociologist and philosopher Ted Nelson to define the complexity of the interconnections in the field of knowledge, made up of myriad cross-relationships. Embracing this vision, 'Intertwingled. The Role of the Rug in Arts, Crafts and Design' - published to mark the exhibition of the same name curated by Martí Guixé and Inga Knölke at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome - offers a fascinating, open, and disruptive interpretation of the interconnected world in which we live. Intertwingled started as an original project to explore, through the artworks and the objects in the context of the exhibition and the museum, rugs and tapestries in different fields: art, craft, design. The book continues this exploration, expanding it in different directions, projecting the rug into more conceptual realms, establishing new relationships with ideas such as nomadism, real estate, visible and invisible networks, hypertext, decentralized power, non-linear narratives, and the inherent power in the concept of unity. With texts by Cristiana Collu, Martí Guixé, Inga Knölke, Cornelia Lauf, Egill Sæbjörnsson, Oliver Vogt. Artists: Carla Accardi, Saâdane Afif, Maryam Akhondzada, Roberto Aloi, Giacomo Balla, Marion Baruch, Gastone Biggi, Alighiero Boetti, Shannon Bool, Dirk Braeckman, Max Bucaille, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Giorgio Ceretti, Eduardo Chillida, Enrico Ciuti, Christophe Cuzin, Giorgio de Chirico, Michele De Lucchi, Mario De Luigi, Fortunato Depero, Pietro Derossi, Isabella Ducrot, Alice Eberever, Fabrizio Felici, Lucio Fontana, Silvia Giambrone, Martí Guixé, Klaus Haapaniemi, Kimsooja, Inga Knölke, Jiří Kolář, Maria Lai, Bice Lazzari, Anna Maria Maiolino, Malika, Javier Mariscal, Nani Marquina, Giuseppe Micali, Ariadna Miquel, Mustras, Gastone Novelli, Alberto Olmo, Achille Pace, Claudio Parmiggiani, Alessandro Pedretti, Jackson Pollock, Riccardo Rosso, Italo Rota, Joaquim Ruiz Millet, Egill Sæbjörnsson, Antonio Sanfilippo, Corrado Sassi, Daniel Schwartz, Ettore Sottsass, Jana Sterbak, Massimo Uberti, Patricia Urquiola, Stefano Ussi, Emilio Vedova.

Abstract

Under the label Atelier Zanolli, a fantastic world of silk fabrics that were painted and imprinted with patterns, opulently embroidered cushions, colorful pearl creations, as well as finely crafted leather and wood articles, was created between 1905 and 1939 in Zurich. The Zanollis had immigrated from Italy in 1905. Their family business was entirely women-run by mother Antonietta and her daughters Pia, Lea, and Zoe Zanolli. The cultural and stylistic influences manifested in the Zanollis’ visually appealing product world range from the avant-garde to a typically Swiss aesthetic forged by a national spirit of defense against the increasingly felt threat that Nazi Germany posed to the country in the 1930s. Driven by a striving for artistic self-realization, the atelier defied the many economic challenges of the period and carried out many commissions for Zurich’s leading textile businesses and department stores. This book traces the history of Atelier Zanolli, places its work in the context of the development of Zurich and the Swiss textile industry in the first half of the 20th century, and for the first time also positions the “Zanolli style” internationally. More than 600 images show the wealth of colors and shapes of the cosmos of textiles and crafted objects, as well as templates, sketches, private photographs, business cards, and letters. The essays illuminate the techniques and work processes used, discuss entire motif families and unique designs, and grant a rare comprehensive insight into the tastes of the time.Contributions by Nadja Aebi, Franziska Born, Sabine Flaschberger, Barbara Junod, Julia Klinner, Tina Moor, Denise Ruisinger, Lela Scherrer, Katharina Tietze, and Virginia Gardner Troy

Abstract

Ria Bosman's body of work spans four decades. Like all abstract art, her work does not depict anything other than its presence as an object. Her woven pieces are minimal, geometric, and repetitive. Coloured strips of flax are tightly woven into flat tapestries, and only show a play of straight lines and rectangular planes, or small monochrome works that consist of pieces of leather glued together with paint; they form prolonged, recurring series in her oeuvre. Silent witnesses of: nothing. Yet her works resist a negative description with all their might, they are: something. They represent the hope that bright artifacts can emerge from the unknown visible, in order to contemplate that unknown, 'Untitled'.

Abstract

The catalogue that accompanies the exhibition Re-enchanting the World by Małgorzata Mirga-Tas in the Polish Pavilion at the 59th International Art Exhibition (the first time that a Roma artist is representing a national pavilion in the over-120-year history of the Venice Biennale): an attempt to expand the Polish and European iconosphere and art history with representations of Roma culture. Re-enchanting the World is a publication accompanying Małgorzata Mirga-Tas’s exhibition of the same name, shown in the Polish pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale. The exhibit is Mirga-Tas’s manifesto on Roma identity and art, drawing inspiration from the Renaissance frescoes of the Palazzo Schifanoia in Ferrara and thus attempting to expand the European iconosphere and history of art with representations of Roma culture. The title of the project and this book is inspired by Silvia Federici’s book Re-enchanting the World: Feminism and the Politics of the Commons (2018), in which re-enchanting—a non-violent process in which women play an important role—reverses the unfortunate fate of the world, shaking off its evil spell. This publication presents Mirga-Tas’s re-enchanting of the world as a way of recovering the idea of the Roma community, with consideration to transnationality, cyclicity and the evolution of meanings, proposing a new narrative about the continuous cultural migration of images and mutual influences between Roma, Polish and European cultures.Within the multidirectional texts featuring poetry, prose and essays, as well as images of Mirga-Tas’s project and its process, we witness her re-enchantment of the world through a re-examination of identity, a recognition of feminine power, and a re-presentation of historical and contemporary visual narratives.

Abstract

Abstract

"Garmenting: Costume as Contemporary Art centers on contemporary artists' explorations of how dress both expresses and shapes who we are-our personal, cultural, and political identities-and it is my hope that their work will help stimulate discussion and foster understanding during these troubled times. As the quintessential "outside the box" thinkers, artists have always been on the front lines of driving and processing social change; there is a reason cutting-edge art has long been referred to by a military term, "avant-garde." As society rebuilds, artists' insights about our world and how we inhabit it are more necessary than ever"--

Abstract

The book presents an early career survey of the work of Cape Town-based artist Igshaan Adams (born 1982), showcasing his multimedia practice since 2009. In addition to exploring recurring motifs in his work-Arabic calligraphy, the rose, the (self-)portrait, Sufi symbols, and pathways literal and metaphorical-the publication highlights some of Adams's material concerns, including his sculptural applications of weaving, his embrace of recycled materials related to black South African domesticity and interiority, and his use of the gallery wall and floor in installations. Hendrik Folkerts surveys the artist's recent work, addressing its engagement with presence, absence, and the trace. Adams himself offers a visual essay enabling readers to see details they would be imperceptible in a gallery setting. In shorter essays and poetic texts, the other authors focus on the South African historical and political context, specific artworks, and particular creative strategies, materialities, and narratives

Abstract

Sawing a plank is like going for a walk by Kato Six (b. 1986) is published on the occasion of Kato's solo exhibition at M Leuven this autumn. This book encapsulates 10 years of her quest as an artist. The work of Kato Six (b. 1986) balances between abstract and figurative art. She works on different themes which she develops into series or ensembles. Architecture, design, domesticity and utensils all act as important references. Starting there, she uses recognisable and everyday materials such as MDF, stone, plastic or textiles. Kato wants to question certain affinities and let the viewer look at familiar objects or images from a different perspective. As a viewer, you feel connected to the object or image but the actual meaning or function no longer applies.

Abstract

In her work, Lisa Vlaemminck explores the boundaries of painting, creating an exciting, vibrating and disorienting universe. In her images, she questions very classical phenomena in painting, such as the landscape and the still life, by freezing them behind semi-transparent layers of paint. We catch a glimpse that feels familiar, but soon find that nothing is what it seems. Vlaemminck’s work oscillates between the microscopic and the interstellar, as well as the amorphous spaces in between. Image, material, shape, texture and form mutate into compositional playgrounds floating in a newly created universe where different laws and rules apply. The book “Screensaver Error” is conceived as a symmetrical, folded stack of sheets with images of Lisa’s paintings and collages. At the heart of the book is the sixty-metre long, worm-shaped textile sculpture, which runs like a stream through the book for many pages. Dominique De Groen wrote an electrically charged shimmering poem tailored to the work. The introductory text was written by Simon Delobel. In KIOSK, Lisa Vlaemminck presents a series of new paintings and a sixty-metre long textile sculpture that will occupy the various exhibition spaces. For the design of the fabric, Lisa worked patterns that form a long colour gradient.
