"COVID-19 thrust chaplains-especially those in healthcare-into the national spotlight as they cared for patients, family members, and exhausted and traumatized medical staff fighting the pandemic in real time. That spotlight, like COVID-19, was new, but the work of chaplains was not. I step back from the spotlight in this book to ask who chaplains are, what they do across the United States, how that work is connected to the settings where they do it, and how they have responded to and helped to shape contemporary shifts in the American religious landscape. I focus on Boston as a case study to show how chaplains have been, and remain, an important part of institutional religious ecologies, both locally and nationally. I engage with scholarly literatures in sociology, religious studies, and organizational studies to contextualize these data. I encourage scholars, religious leaders, and educators to step back and look broadly enough that they can see chaplains and integrate their work into thinking about American religious life. Considering the work of chaplains and keeping it on the radar of scholars and religious leaders may be a source of continuing insights into the future of religious life in the United States"--

Volume 1 : The first volume in Travis B. Williams' and David G. Horrell's magisterial ICC commentary on first Peter. Williams and Horrell bring together all the relevant aids to exegesis - linguistic, textual, archaeological, historical, literary, and theological - to help the reader understand the letter. This first volume presents introductory maps, and a comprehensive introduction covering aspects such as genre, canonicity, early citations of the letter, and its theology and influence. A particular feature of the introduction is that each section is preceded by an initial bibliography. The exegesis also provides for each passage sections on bibliography, text-criticism, literary introduction, detailed exegesis, and overall summary. Following the introduction volume 1 provides commentary up to 2.10, the conclusion of the first major section of the letter.

This volume is intended to honour Reimund Bieringer at the occasion of his retirement from the position of Professor of New Testament Exegesis at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. Bieringer's contribution to scholarship, but also other manifold ways in which he has served the profession, have been characterised by an exceptional combination of attention to detail, passion for justice, integrity, courage, and kindness. The collection brings together essays in English and German by friends and colleagues exploring, but also problematising, kindness, courage, integrity, and related qualities, from a range of perspectives. In addition to contributions discussing specific exegetical problems, and focusing on how kindness, courage, integrity, or their aspects, are conceptualised, manifested, and valorised in select biblical texts and their reception, the collection also includes articles dealing with broader hermeneutical questions, as well as querying the role of kindness, courage, and integrity in the interpretive process and choices made by individuals and communities as interpreters.

Scholars in England in the Middle Ages understood the value of studying languages and their grammar, and the Hebrew language was theologically relevant and ideologically potent. Because it was difficult to procure Hebrew bibles, dictionaries and grammar manuals, some Christian scholars created their own manuals and textbooks with the help of Jewish teachers. This volume presents an edition, facsimile, and analysis of one such learning tool, a succinct Hebrew grammar written in Hebrew, Latin, and Anglo-Norman French in England in the thirteenth century.

--Droz (1994) Forty years after the publication of Bibliography of French Bibles. Fifteenth- and Sixteenth-Century French-Language Editions of the Scriptures, the present supplement serves as an update of the original work. The Supplement maintains the format of the Bibliography – transcription of the title page (sometimes illustrated), bibliographical description, references, locations of copies, brief commentary on the edition, especially on the version of the text it represents – but with almost double the number of copies and locations found in the original work, more than 50 newly discovered editions or issues, more than 20 ghosts, and three new appendices. --Droz (2023)

Friendship and other intimate (but not always amicable) relationships have received some attention in the greater field of research on early Judaism and Christianity, though not as much as deserved. This volume celebrates and builds upon the life-long work of Adele Reinhartz, covering the various permutations of relationships that can be found in the Gospel of John, the wider corpus of early Jewish and Christian literature, and cinematic re-imaginings thereof. While the issue of whether one can 'befriend' the Fourth Gospel in light of the book's legacy of antisemitism is central to many of the essays in this volume, others address other more or less likely friendships: Pilate, Paul, Lazarus, Judas, or Mary Magdalene. Likewise, the bonds between ancient texts and contemporary retellings of their stories feature prominently, with contributors asking what kinds of relationships filmmakers encourage their audiences to have with their subjects. This volume explores some of the rich variety of relationships in the ancient world, and unpacks the intricate and dynamic processes and interactions by which human relationships and societies are generated, maintained, and dissolved.

"The Christian Humanist ideas of six Catholic scholars who were based in Munich during the first half of the 20th century are profiled in this volume. They were all interested in presenting and defending a Christian humanism in the aftermath of German Idealism and the anti-Christian humanism of Friedrich Nietzsche. They were seeking to offer hope to Christians during the darkest years of the Nazi regime and the post-Second World War era of shame, guilt and reconstruction."--
