Ceramics have been essential in the domestic sphere and their production has undergone in the preindustrial era technological and cultural changes whose importance is obvious. This paper is to show in a very concise way how the production of European glazed ceramics underwent three phases of intense transformation of useful knowledge related to its production, with a successive accumulation leading to increasingly efficient results and a higher level of productivity. Moreover, it can be safely stated that, without this accumulation, the great progress of the 19th century in this area would have been impossible.

Advanced Flexible Ceramics: Design, Properties, Manufacturing, and Emerging Applications provides detailed information on the properties and applications of advanced flexible ceramics. Sections cover materials dependent flexible behavior, microstructure and phases, the operational life of ceramics, how flexible materials can influence smart behavior (shape memory and self-healing), and thermal, physical, mechanical, electrical and optical properties. Various processing routes such as powder metallurgy, both physical and chemical vapor deposition, sol-gel, 3D print, and roll-to-roll processing are also explained in detail. The later section of the book provides detailed coverage of emerging technological applications. Additional chapters cover cost-effectiveness and the global market and recycling and future challenges and perspectives. This will be an essential reference resource for academic and industrial researchers working in the fields of refractory linings, high-temperature equipment, shielding, and MEMS/NEMS.

Perovskite-based ceramics are a significant class of innovative materials with fascinating physical properties, which are now receiving intensive research attention in condensed matter physics and in the area of practical device applications. Perovskite Ceramics provides a state-of-the-art review on the latest advances in perovskite-based ceramic materials, as well as the development of devices from these materials for different applications. Perovskite Ceramics: Recent Advances and Emerging Applications is divided into two main parts. The first part focuses on the basics of perovskite-based ceramic materials and includes chapters on the fundamentals, synthesis and processing, characterization, and properties of these materials. Chapters are also included on bulk and thin materials, phase transitions, polaronic effects and the compensation and screening of ferroelectricity. This section will allow the reader to familiarize themselves with the standard traditional approach, but it will also introduce new concepts that are fast evolving in this field. The second part presents an extensive review of up-to-date research on new and innovative advances in perovskite-based ceramic materials. Chapters cover multiferroic applications, lead-free perovskites, energy storage applications, perovskite-based memories, light manipulation and spectral modifications, and solar cells and fuel cells. All these fields of research are rapidly evolving, so the book acts a platform to showcase latest results on optical strategies and materials for light manipulation, and spectral up- and down-conversion too (mainly rare earth doped oxides and complexes). The book will be an essential reference resource for academic and industrial researchers working in materials research and development particularly in functional and oxide ceramics and perovskites.

This book covers the discovery and the results of the analytical study of the composition of the Farnley Hall service, involving both the embossed moulding and the decorative compositions. The discovery of this missing porcelain service, which was manufactured 200 years ago, is a modern detective story in the preservation of cultural heritage, whilst its physical analysis has identified some new data that need to be incorporated into correcting and expanding the literature that is used for the differentiation of porcelains by ceramic historians and museum conservators. The importance of the Farnley Hall service discovery is that it provides the only example of such a Nantgarw Porcelain service that still resides in its original place of usage from 200 years ago: it is therefore a unique example and is a very important part of our national cultural heritage. It provides an illustration of the data that can be accessed from the application of inductive reasoning to elicit novel information about a manufactory whose work books no longer exist and its comparison with contemporary manufactories in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The concepts can be appreciated by experts and also by non-technical readers. This is the first time that such a detailed research approach has been adopted for any comparative ceramic project. The book is therefore relevant for a specialist and non-specialist readership, including museum ceramics curators and collectors of the genre.

This award-winning textbook delivers an earnest and comprehensive treatment of the rapidly evolving field of Materials Chemistry. It addresses inorganic-, organic-, and nano-based materials from a structure vs. property treatment, providing a suitable breadth and depth coverage of the field—in a concise and accessible format. The updated 4th edition features significant updates to glasses and ceramics, solid-state impurities, nanomaterial toxicity, as well as materials used in energy storage, photovoltaic, and electronics applications. Advanced fabrication techniques such as additive manufacturing (3-D printing) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) characterization of suspended nanoparticles are now also included. This new edition also expands the coverage of sustainability and life cycle analysis, of increasing importance for a world plagued with the effects of climate change. Recognized by a 2008 Textbook Excellence Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association (TAA), Fahlman’s Materials Chemistry is ideal for upper-level undergraduate students, as well as first-year graduate students in chemistry, physics, or engineering fields, and may also serve as a valuable reference to industrial researchers. Each chapter concludes with a section that describes important materials applications and an updated list of thought-provoking questions.

The book focuses on joining of advanced materials such as ceramics, intermetallics, laminated materials, composite materials and functional materials considering both in theory and in practice. It also covers details of joint design, weldability and quality assurance of the product. Both principles and engineering practice have been addressed to show advanced, scientific and novelty features. The latest research on advanced joining technology is one of the major features of the book, which is particularly suited for readers who are interested to learn practical solutions in joining of advanced materials. The book can benefit researchers, engineers and graduate students in the fields of joining, materials design and manufacturing, etc. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.
