Abstract

Abstract

Based on the experience at one of the largest centers for craniosynostosis and craniofacial malformations, this book reports on the clinical use of a rare technique known as Frontofacial Monobloc Advancement (FFMBA), one of the most rewarding procedures for upper- and mid-face reconstruction in patients with faciocraniosynostosis, a rare craniofacial anomaly associated with premature fusion of multiple cranial sutures presenting with brachycephaly, orbital proptosis, maxillary hypoplasia and anterior crossbite. Technical refinements and strategic planning have made it almost a routine procedure at the French Reference Center for Craniosynostosis and Craniofacial Malformations. This easy-to-consult, well illustrated book includes technical tips and indications for its use in Crouzon, Pfeiffer and Apert syndromes. It also provides a protocol, including a proposed management algorithm for faciocraniosynostosis. As such, it will appeal to craniofacial surgeons, especially those at large craniofacial centers.

Abstract

This book is an interdisciplinary study of the engagement with and representation of the face across literature, photography, and theatre. It looks at how the face is an active agent, closely connected with the history of the media and the social interactions reflected in media images. Focusing on the dynamic period of the interwar years, it explores a range of case studies in Poland, UK, and the US, and examines artists like Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (Witkacy), Virginia Woolf, Debora Vogel, Sir Cecil Beaton, Theodore Władysław Benda, and Edward Gordon Craig. Teresa Bruś argues that these writers and photographers defended the face against threats from modern life – not least, the media. She focuses on transformations of the face in life writing across a range of media and draws attention to the artists’ autobiographical narratives.

Abstract

Abstract

This comprehensive and visually engaging color atlas and manual serves as an invaluable resource for orthognathic and orthofacial surgeons seeking detailed information on the various aspects of minimally invasive (MI) orthognathic surgery. The initial two chapters lay the foundation for a groundbreaking and innovative approach to MI orthognathic surgery, drawing from a wealth of 25 years of experience. The authors delve into the rationale behind this novel concept, aiming to enhance surgical efficiency and minimize patient morbidity. They present an in-depth exploration of the new surgical algorithm, which encompasses a systematic, step-by-step standardization of MI orthognathic techniques. The development of specialized MI orthognathic instruments and the introduction of innovative surgical codes, sequences, and templates are thoroughly elucidated. Subsequently, the following five chapters meticulously outline the "step-by-step" MI surgical techniques for the five primary orthognathic surgical procedures. These descriptions are accompanied by detailed illustrations, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of each technique. In the closing chapter, the book delves into the essential conditions required for successful MI orthognathic surgery, providing a thorough exploration of these necessary prerequisites. This book serves as a practical and user-friendly guide, offering clear and straightforward "step-by-step" instructions suitable for residents in training, junior surgeons, as well as experienced practitioners. Orthognathic and orthofacial surgeons will find "Minimally Invasive (MI) Orthognathic Surgery" to be an outstanding companion in their routine surgical practice.

Abstract

"In this riveting feat of reporting, Kashmir Hill illuminates the improbable rise of Clearview AI and how Hoan Ton-That, a computer engineer and Richard Schwartz, a Giuliani associate, launched a terrifying facial recognition app with society-altering potential. They were assisted by a cast of controversial characters, including conservative provocateur Charles Johnson and billionaire Trump backer Peter Thiel. The app can scan a blurry portrait, and, in just seconds, collect every instance of a person's online life. It can find your name, your social media profiles, your friends and family, even your home address (as well as photos of you that you may not even have known existed). The story of Clearview AI opens up a window into a larger, more urgent one about our tortured relationship to technology, the way it entertains and seduces us even as it steals our privacy and lays us bare to bad actors in politics, criminal justice, and tech. This technology has been quietly growing more powerful for decades. Ubiquitous in China and Russia, it was also developed by American companies, including Google and Facebook, who decided it was too radical to release. That did not stop Clearview. They gave demos of the tech to interested private investors and contracted it out to hundreds of law enforcement agencies around the country. American law enforcement, including the Department of Homeland Security, has already used it to arrest people for everything from petty theft to assault. Without regulation it could expand the reach of policing-as it has in China and Russia-to a terrifying, dystopian level"--
