Abstract

The electroweak theory unifies two basic forces of nature: the weak force and electromagnetism. This 2007 book is a concise introduction to the structure of the electroweak theory and its applications. It describes the structure and properties of field theories with global and local symmetries, leading to the construction of the standard model. It describes the particles and processes predicted by the theory, and compares them with experimental results. It also covers neutral currents, the properties of W and Z bosons, the properties of quarks and mesons containing heavy quarks, neutrino oscillations, CP-asymmetries in K, D, and B meson decays, and the search for Higgs particles. Each chapter contains problems, stemming from the long teaching experience of the author, to supplement the text. This will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers in elementary particle physics. This title from 2007 has been reissued as an Open Access publication on Cambridge Core.

Abstract

This is a problem-oriented introduction to the main ideas, methods, and problems needed to form a basic understanding of the theory of strong interactions. Each section contains solid but concise technical foundations to key concepts of the theory, and the level of rigor is appropriate for readers with a background in physics (rather than mathematics). It begins with a foundational introduction to topics including SU(N) group, hadrons and effective SU(3) symmetric flavor lagrangians, constituent quarks in hadrons, quarks and gluons as fundamental fields. It then discusses Quantum chromodynamics as a gauge field theory, functional integration, and Wilson lines and loops, before moving on to discuss gauge-fixing and Faddeev - Popov ghosts, Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin symmetry, and lattice methods. It concludes with a discussion on the anomalies and the strong CP problem, effective action, chiral perturbation theory, deep inelastic scattering, and derivation and solution of the Dokshitzer - Gribov - Lipatov - Altarelli - Parisi equations. Constructed as a one-term course on strong interactions for advanced students, it will be a useful self-study guide for graduate and PhD students of high energy physics, Quantum Chromodynamics, and the Standard Modelr.

Abstract

Abstract

Laser-plasma interaction is a continuously growing field with a broad range of applications in fundamental science, industry, and medicine. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the physics of the interaction of intense laser pulses with high-temperature plasmas motivated by applications in high-energy-density physics and inertial confinement fusion. It combines the presentation of basic elements of the kinetics of charged particles in plasma and properties of electromagnetic waves with up-to-date developments related to nonlinear laser-plasma interactions, plasma heating, particle acceleration, excitation and mitigation of parametric instabilities. The book is based on the lectures taught by the author to students at master’s and graduate levels. It provides original material combining qualitative descriptions of physical processes with a strict but accessible theoretical background and practical exercises.

Abstract

The Lund model, inspired by quantum chromodynamics, has provided a promising approach to the dynamics of quark and gluon interactions. Starting with a brief reprise of basic concepts in relativity, quantum mechanics of fields and particle physics, this book discusses: the dynamics of the massless relativistic string; confinement; causality and relativistic covariance; Lund fragmentation processes; QED and QCD Bremsstrahlung; multiplicities and particle-parton distributions. Throughout the book, theory is confronted with current experimental data, and implications for future experiments are also considered. The book also explores the relationships between the Lund model and other models based on field theory (the Schwinger model, S-matrix models, light-cone algebra physics and variations of the parton model), and models based on statistical mechanics (the Feynman-Wilson gas, scaling, iterative cascade models). This title, first published in 1998, has been reissued as an Open Access publication on Cambridge Core.

Abstract

The book is conceived at two levels. An introductory one intended for undergraduate and/or environmental studies students and the other (in the appendix) for advanced students (graduate). The book is different from others on the same subject which are either too descriptive or too much specialized. Beside there are large sections on biogeochemistry not usually found in other textbooks. Whenever possible an approach based on entropy considerations is introduced. The book includes a quite classical introduction to the thermodynamics of ocean and atmosphere, then the circulation of the ocean and atmosphere, the connection climate-chemistry with main emphasis on the carbon dioxide problem. The chemistry is also considered in connection with the polluted atmosphere and ocean and particulate in the atmosphere . A chapter is dedicated to the biogeochemical cycles which are solved both with the integration of a system of equations or matrix algebra. An original chapter is dedicated to sea-atmosphere interactions which includes the monsoons meteorology, hurricanes and the ENSO phenomena. Finally a concise description of the fluid environments in the Solar System is given.

Abstract

Nanoparticles and Plant-Microbe Interactions: An Environmental Perspective, Volume Seven in the Nanomaterial-Plant Interactions series, provides comprehensive coverage on how nanoparticles can impact plant-microbe interactions. Key themes include nanoparticle synthesis, nano-phytoremediation, nano-farming, the negative impacts of nanoparticles, and nanomaterials in mitigating stress. This will be an essential read for any scientist or researcher looking to assess and understand the potential toxicological risks associated with plant nanotechnology, with particular focus on plant-microbe interactions. Nanotechnology is an emerging field with a vast range of nano-based products for commercial exploitation. The interactions of nanoparticles, plants and microbes can be harnessed in several applications, including alleviating environmental pollution. In addition to the aforementioned content, the book also explores concerns surrounding the toxicity of nanoparticles themselves, an important aspect to be aware, along with potential negative effects. Discusses the latest advances in the use of nanotechnology in plants and plant-microbe interactions Considers the potential negative impacts of nanotechnology on the environment Presents the applications of nanomaterials, including their role in stress mitigation.
