Abstract

Placemaking and cultural landscapes are worldwide multidisciplinary global concerns that cover many points of view of the common impacts of socio-economic cultural and rights jurisprudence planning, wellbeing and related advancements. Concerned with the complex interactions between the development and environment of those factors, it is important to seek ways, paths and implications for framing sustainability in all social activities. This book is mostly based on the 10th ACLA – Asian Cultural Landscape Association International Webinar Symposium that took place during September 26–27, 2020, in the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. It examines contemporary social–cultural issues in the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) and associated cultural and sacred landscapes. There, the emphasis is on awakening deeper cultural sensitivity in harmonizing the world and the role of society and spiritual systems, drawing upon multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural interfaces—all within the scope of the future of the earth. The book’s chapters add a new dimension of cultural understanding in the broad domain of emerging human geoscience, considered as key policy science for contributing towards sustainability and survivability science together with future earth initiatives.

Abstract

"This edited volume considers the many ways in which landscape (seen and unseen) is fundamental to place-making, colonial settlement, and identity formation. Collectively, the authors map a constellation of interlocking photographic histories and survey practices, decentering Europe as the origin of camera-based surveillance. The volume charts a conversation across continents -- connecting Europe, Africa, the Arab World, Asia, and the Americas. It does not segregate places, histories, and traditions, but rather puts them in dialogue with one another, establishing solidarity across national, linguistic, racial, religious, and ethnic borders, which are not fixed but always shifting within current geo-political contexts. Refusing the neat organization of survey photographs into national or imperial narratives, these essays celebrate the messy, cross-cultural reverberations of landscape over the past 170 years. Considering the visual, social, and historical networks in which these images circulate, this anthology connects the many entangled and political histories of photography in order to reframe survey practices and the multidimensionality of landscape as an international phenomenon. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, history of photography, and landscape history"--

Abstract

In recent decades, archaeology has undergone a process of deep transformation and epistemological refounding. A global and contextual vision has been succeding in the reading of stratified landscapes through a multidisciplinary study of artefacts and ecofacts, in order to reconstruct the relationships between society and the environment. Thus understood, archaeology also aims at contributing to the construction of 'place consciousness' and the emergence of 'heritage communities' by fostering participation and forms of social protection of territorial heritages.
