Catherine Breillat n'a jamais raconté qu'une seule histoire : la sienne, celle d'une jeune fille interdite d'existence qu'on aura, dès l'enfance, coupée en deux, écartelée entre son cerveau et son sexe, marquée par la honte d'être née femme. Elle est devenue cinéaste à une époque où choisir cette vocation consistait à désobéir à tout le monde. Depuis son premier film, Une vraie jeune fille (1975), jusqu'à L'Eté dernier (2023), elle filme pour reprendre ce qu'on lui a volé, pour explorer ce qu'elle appelle l'"infilmable" : cette inépuisable zone grise du féminin où honte, transgression, volupté, dégoût et quête de soi s'entremêlent jusqu'à se confondre.Son oeuvre formule un lancinant "Connais-toi toi-même" , un voyage spirituel qui, pour ses héroïnes, s'articule comme une guerre ouverte avec l'autre sexe.
