Abstract

The first comprehensive scholarly volume on Kim Ki-young and his films in EnglishOffers an innovative critical analysis of Kim Ki-young’s films from a range of fresh and nuanced perspectivesIntroduces a significant South Korean film auteur within the history of global cinema whose work has been previously overlookedIncreases the understanding of modern South Korean history and culture through an analysis of the trajectory of Kim Ki-young’s workWorld-renowned South Korean directors, including Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon Ho, cite Kim Ki-young as being the greatest Korean influence on their work. During his thirty year career, Kim Ki-young produced thirty-three films and became revered by critics within the national and international community as one of the few South Korean ‘auteurs’. As the first comprehensive scholarly volume on Kim Ki-young in English, ReFocus: The Films of Kim Ki-young covers his entire career and history of cinematic work, highlighting the thematic and stylistic singularity of Kim’s oeuvre, which was produced relative to the specific historical and cultural conditions of post-war South Korea. It offers an innovative departure point from which to explore South Korean film relative to the wider history of world cinema, in addition to situating Kim’s work within the broader fields of Korean modern history, transnational cinema and cultural studies.

Abstract

Abstract

"Francophone African Women Documentary Filmmakers is groundbreaking edited collection which explores the contributions of Francophone African women to the field of documentary filmmaking. Rich in its scope and critical vision it constitutes a timely contribution to cutting-edge scholarly debates on African cinemas. Featuring 10 chapters from prominent film scholars, it explores the distinctive documentary work and contributions of Francophone African women filmmakers since the 1960s. It focuses documentaries by North African and Sub-Saharan women filmmakers, including the pioneering work of Safi Faye in Kaddu Beykat, Rama Thiaw's The Revolution Will Not be Televised, Katy Lena Ndiaye's Le Cercle des noyes and En attendant les hommes, Dalila Ennadre's Fama: Heroism Without Glory and Leila Kitani's Nos lieux interdits. Shunned from costly fictional- 35mm-filmmaking, Francophone African Women Documentary Filmmakers examines how these women engaged and experimented with documentary filmmaking in personal, evocative ways that countered the officially sanctioned, nationalist practice of show and teach/promote"--

Abstract

(coffret)

Abstract

Abstract

"With her debut as a filmmaker, Lemmons' Eve's Bayou was both miracle and miraculous. The same can be said of this richly deserved, thorough and scholarly examination of her first five films." — Angela Bassett, Actor/Filmmaker. "This is a solid volume focusing on the work of Kasi Lemmons. This volume should have a very long shelf-life as it has not been embarked upon before by any researcher. Professor Wynter has taken up this mantle because she has recognized there is a dearth in scholarship pertaining to the work of Kasi Lemmons that is most deserving given the filmmaker’s body of esteemed work." —R. Dianne Bartlow, PhD Author, Altruism and African-American Women in Contemporary Popular Music. In this edited volume, Kasi Lemmons, the first African-American woman auteur to solidly and steadily produce a full body of work in cinema—an oeuvre of quality, of note, of international recognition—will get the full film-studies treatment. This collection offers the first scholarly examination of Lemmons’ films through various frameworks of film theory, illuminating her highly personal, unique, and rare vision. In Lemmons’ worldview, the spiritual and the supernatural manifest in the natural, corporeal world. She subtly infuses her work with such images and narratives, owning her formalism, her modernist aesthetic, her cinematic preoccupations and her ontological leanings on race. Lemmons holds the varied experiences of African-American life before her lens—the ambitious bourgeoise, the spiritually lost, the ill and discarded, and the historically erased—and commits to capturing the nuances and differentiations, rather than perpetuating essentialized portrayals. This collection delves into Lemmons’ iconoclastic drive and post-soul aesthetic as emanations of her attitudes toward personal agency, social agency, and social justice. Dianah Wynter is a Full Professor at California State University Northridge, USA, where she teaches Women Filmmakers, Directing, and Film as Literature. An Emmy-nominated director, she holds MFAs from the Yale School of Drama and the American Film Institute. Her publications include Referentiality and the Films of Woody Allen. .

Abstract

"A visual tribute to Agnès Varda's three lives as a photographer, filmmaker and artist, with previously unseen archival materials, texts and personal reflections from Jane Birkin, Martin Scorsese, JR, and more. French filmmaker Agnès Varda was a trailblazer who broke new artistic and cinematic ground for nearly seven decades. Although closely associated with the French New Wave, Varda established her groundbreaking visual style in her 1955 debut film La Pointe Courte, well before other milestones such as François Truffaut's The !àà Blows and Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless. Varda impacted cinema from her first feature film through her final works, with an expansive oeuvre that includes Cleo from # to à (1962), Vagabond (1985) and the Academy Award-nominated Faces Places (2017). Agnès Varda: Director's Inspiration presents the first English-language visual showcase for Varda's inspirations, art and personal life, incorporating original materials from her personal archive on Rue daguerre. The book covers Varda's "three lives"-as photographer, filmmaker and visual artist-and features a previously unpublished interview Varda gave to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on the eve of receiving her Honorary Oscar in 2017. Essays by author Sasha Archibald and film critic Peter Debruge examine facets of Varda's creative lives, and personal reflections by friends and colleagues illustrate what it was like to collaborate with and be inspired by Varda. Agnès Varda (1928-2019) was a French filmmaker, photographer and visual artist, sometimes called the grandmother of the French New Wave. In 2018, her film with the French photographer and muralist known as JR, Faces Places, received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature, and that same year she received an honorary Academy Award for lifetime achievement"--

Abstract

Working across a range of formats, from video art and gallery installations to independent cinema to Hollywood to the BBC, Steve McQueen’s prodigious output has been marked by formal ambition and political urgency. This vital collection interrogates his body of work, its political, aesthetic and institutional dimensions, and the interfaces between them. It offers critical insights into McQueen’s engagements with race, gender, the body, love and pain, and his abiding self-reflexive interest in the potential of multiple audio-visual forms. The first director to win both the Turner Prize and an Oscar for best picture, McQueen is probably the most important working British film maker. This book explores the controversies as well as the achievements in his stellar career so far.
