It unveils the key challenges confronting the potential accession of the United Kingdom, China and Taiwan to the agreement. Broader issues including strategies of ASEAN, the United States and the European Union are also carefully analyzed. The book will be an indispensable reference for diplomats and scholars in international economic policy." - Pasha L. Hsieh, Jean Monnet Chair Professor, Singapore Management University, Singapore "This book offers a good and comprehensive stocktaking exercise of all major issues involved. It provides a wide range of discussions from cross-disciplined scholars, underpinning a cross-country comparison of CPTPP strategies and approaches and is a well structured volume on regional integration progress." - Huai-Shing Yen, Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, Taiwan The CPTPP is far from faltering after US withdrawal, several more countries have since applied to join, including China, Taiwan and the United Kingdom, in what some observers see as a contest between China and the USA to control or re-write the rules of international trade. This volume considers the three applications, the likely responses of existing members, the implications for cross-Strait tension between China and Taiwan, and the ability of the USA to influence the outcome. Abstract

How did Britain's most prominent armaments firms, Armstrongs and Vickers, build their businesses and sell armaments in Britain and overseas from 1855 to 1955? Joanna Spear presents a comparative analysis of these firms and considers the relationships they built with the British Government and foreign states. She reveals how the firms developed and utilized independent domestic strategies and foreign policies against the backdrop of imperial expansion and the two world wars. Using extensive new research, this study examines the challenges the two firms faced in making domestic and international sales including the British Government's commitment to laissez faire policies, prejudices within the British elite against those in trade, and departmental resistance to dealing with private firms. It shows the suite of strategies and tactics that the firms developed to overcome these obstacles to selling arms at home and abroad and how they built enduring relationships with states in Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East.

Abstract

This book offers a new perspective on the concept of modernity. Since its invention as a contrast to Antiquity or the Middle Ages, modernity has been tied to ideas of superiority, progress, and efficiency. As a counterpart to the Marxist “history of class struggle”, “modernization theories” have transformed modernity into an almost teleological concept of historical development. These strong connotations obstruct a clear look at other forms of modernity. The contributions of the volume will show in a comparative perspective how modernity can also be understood and analyzed as multiple responses of societies and polities to organize themselves in facing ever more complex and integrated interactions at ever larger scales.

Abstract

This volume surveys and combines the different dimensions of globalization so as to propose a general diagnosis of the way they interact to explain growing inequality in advanced economies. The extant economic literature has widely analyzed (i) the impact on inequality of trade between advanced and emerging countries (North-South Trade), particularly offshoring, (ii) the impact of tax base mobility on tax competition and (iii) the globalization-driven constraints on social policies and labor market institutions. Those three strands of analysis and the related literature have been reviewed in a number of surveys but have not been combined to provide an extensive study of the impact of their interactions on inequality. This volume fills that gap. Providing a general diagnosis of the globalization-inequality nexus within advanced economies and opening new avenues for research and potential reforms, this book will be of interest to researchers and students of economics and the social sciences.

Abstract

This book explores how the economic sphere has experienced an ultimate shape after the occurrence of several crises, since 2000s. The subprime crisis has trigged the transition from conventional to unconventional frameworks in most industrialised and emerging economies. This book highlights how the sovereign debt crisis has exacerbated the economic environment and raised economic uncertainty. This book asserts that markets integration have boosted contagion and risk spillovers among financial markets. Moreover, the Brexit and US-China trade tension has intensified uncertainty and the economic challenges. This book examines in recent times how humanity has experienced the most dramatic health crisis and their economic effects. This pandemic lockdowns several countries and caused an economic and financial collapse. This book expands on these crises, with different origins and mechanisms, have shaped the economic systems in several ways: monetary policy, macroeconomic imbalance, economic growth, economic integration, financial risk, volatility and trade effects. The main aims of this book cover the topical issues related to crises and uncertainty and the economic consequences. Abstract

This open access book compiles a series of chapters written by internationally recognized experts known for their in-depth but critical views on questions of resilience and food security. The book assesses rigorously and critically the contribution of the concept of resilience in advancing our understanding and ability to design and implement development interventions in relation to food security and humanitarian crises. For this, the book departs from the narrow beaten tracks of agriculture and trade, which have influenced the mainstream debate on food security for nearly 60 years, and adopts instead a wider, more holistic perspective, framed around food systems. The foundation for this new approach is the recognition that in the current post-globalization era, the food and nutritional security of the world’s population no longer depends just on the performance of agriculture and policies on trade, but rather on the capacity of the entire (food) system to produce, process, transport and distribute safe, affordable and nutritious food for all, in ways that remain environmentally sustainable. In that context, adopting a food system perspective provides a more appropriate frame as it incites to broaden the conventional thinking and to acknowledge the systemic nature of the different processes and actors involved. This book is written for a large audience, from academics to policymakers, students to practitioners. Christophe Béné is Senior Researcher at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT. He has 20+ years of experience conducting interdisciplinary research and advisory work, focusing on poverty alleviation, food security, and more generally low-income countries’ economic development. Stephen Devereux is a Research Fellow of the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex since 1996, working on famine, food security and social protection, with a focus on Africa. Since 2016 he has held a South Africa-UK Bilateral Research Chair in Social Protection for Food Security, affiliated to the DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security and the University of the Western Cape in South Africa.
