Abstract

Abstract

This visually stunning love letter to the art of craft takes readers inside Europe’s most illustrious—and in many cases endangered—decorative arts workshops to profile how artisans continue to maintain the highest centuries-old standards of workmanship and creativity.Beginning in the Renaissance, ateliers were established as places for European artists to work and teach their crafts. Centuries later most of these spaces have disappeared, but a select few continue to produce some of the world’s most celebrated and sought-after objects in the areas of crystal, ceramics, wrought iron, fabric, bookbinding, mosaic, wood paneling, and more. John Whelan and Oskar Proctor traveled throughout Europe to document these important spaces, both to celebrate them and to preserve their disappearing ideals. Ranging from the well- known to the obscure, this volume takes readers inside dozens of ateliers from Austria, England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. Sumptuous double-page spreads feature alluring photography, and fascinating background texts tell their stories. By shining a light on their collective value as well as their individual expertise, this book offers both a historic evaluation of how ateliers have been shaped by modern forces—and also a clarion call for their preservation.

Abstract

This indispensable new resource is the first English-language anthology of historic preservation theory with an international perspective. It includes close to 100 essential texts spanning three centuries of preservation discourse and theory, from the Enlightenment to the present, each with a critical introduction by the editor. Unique in its geographic and temporal breadth, it shows how ideas stemming from disciplines such as jurisprudence, architecture, art, planning, psychoanalysis, philosophy, and many others were woven together over time into what we now call historic preservation. This anthology offers classic texts from influential thinkers and schools of thought from the United States, China, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Czech Republic, Spain, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, and more. This anthology begins to break down the disciplinary, nationalist and linguistic barriers that have limited the study of preservation theory as it also includes many first-ever English translations of foundational texts, such as Henri Gregoire's "Report on the Destructions Brought About by Vandalism, and on the Means to Suppress It" (1794), which not only coined the word "vandalism" but also served as the intellectual impetus for the creation of a national heritage protection bureaucracy under France's revolutionary government. Other first translations include Georg Dehio's "Monument Protection and Monument Preservation in the Nineteenth Century" (1905), which shaped modern preservation in Germany; Gustavo Giovannoni's "The Theory of Pruning" (1931), which changed the paradigm of how to modernize historic centers in Italy, and Liang Sicheng's "Why We Must Research Chinese Traditional Architecture" (1944). The texts are presented chronologically, with introductions by the editor that contextualize each thinker's contribution to the development of historic preservation theory.

Abstract

Abstract

Many architects and engineers today believe that the most sustainable building is the one that is never demolished. The third edition of the Chapters series developed by the Belgian architecture firm 51N4E therefore tells the story of the transformation of two office towers from the 1970s according to the principles of reduce-reuse-recycle. Against all odds, the former World Trade Center in Brussels will be repurposed in a previously unimaginable way. After many years of vacancy, the building now stands for a new approach to urban development and becomes a showcase for dealing with building fabric from the 1970s that is threatened with demolition, in a more sustainable way. This publication tells the story of the unlikely journey to obtain the building permit, tracing the events that led to this new lease of life. Starting from the initial dream of dismantling the World Trade Center, it recounts the complex and layered process that shaped the innovative adaptive-reuse project called ZIN. Even if the circular, spatial, and material setup is unique to the project, the concepts and the processes behind it are not. By breaking down the complexity of its components, we can understand what has happened, and—more importantly—what could happen to other buildings as well. That is the reason this publication bares witness: to learn how to not demolish a building.
