Abstract

This book reveals multiple aspects of life in the Ottoman palace, in both its public space and private space. It does so by exploring the Sultan Abdülhamid I Tomb in Istanbul, investigating the paths that open to us through the graves of the royalty in the mausoleum and those of the courtiers, eunuchs, concubines and female harem managers in the garden graveyard around it. The treasure of information at this graveyard allows us to piece together a wide spectrum of details that illuminate the court funerary culture of the era as we come to an understanding of the role of royal cemeteries in strengthening the bonds between the reigning House and the populace and enhancing the legitimacy of the dynasty's rule.

It introduces the tomb complex to the reader, interpreting its architecture, art and poetry, before exploring the lives and careers of 65 of the 86 people interred. It reveals intriguing stories - from that of Sultan Abdulhamid's daughter Zeyneb, born when he was a prince and raised in secrecy outside the palace until he came to the throne, to that of Prince Murad, exhumed and reburied late one night in 1812. By exploring the history revealed through these life stories, the book sheds light on Ottoman palace life and culture in an era that witnessed the most wrenching changes of modern Ottoman history seen until then - the reforms forcibly introduced by Sultan Mahmud II after 1826 - and uncovers manifestations of these changes in this graveyard.

Abstract

In 1973 twenty-five young women drowned in a ferry accident on their way to work in factories in Taiwan's Kaohsiung Export Processing Zone. Their remains were recovered and interred collectively in what came to be called the Twenty-five Maiden Ladies Tomb. Without a husband's ancestral hall where they would have been laid to rest, the spirits of these unmarried women were considered homeless and possibly vengeful, and so the Maiden Ladies Tomb was viewed as a place to be avoided-especially by young men traveling alone, fearful of encountering a female ghost searching for a husband. Over the years, numerous plans were made to revamp the tomb site; finally, in 2008, at the urging of local feminist communities, the Kaohsiung City government renovated the Twenty-five Maiden Ladies Tomb and renamed it the Memorial Park for Women Laborers. Haunted Modernities interrogates the nature of shared expressions of history, sentiments, and memory as it investigates the role of these women and other female workers in the shifting public narrative during and after the Maiden Ladies Tomb renovation. By exploring the ways in which the deceased young women were perceived to "haunt" the living and the diverse renovations recommended, the book illuminates how women workers in Taiwan have been conceptualized in the last several decades. In their proposals to renovate the tomb, the interested parties forged specific accounts of history, transforming the collective burial site according to varying definitions of "heritage" as Taiwan shifted to a postindustrial economy, where factory jobs were no longer the main source of employment. Their plans engaged with acts of remembering-communal and individual-to create new ways of understanding the present. The Twenty-five Maiden Ladies Tomb as a heritage site elucidates how "history" and "memory" are not simply about the past but part of a forward-looking process that emerges from the social, political, and economic needs of the present, legitimized and validated through its associations with the past.

Abstract

"The first section of the book chronicles Howard Carter's early life and his search, with Lord Carnarvon, for Tutankhamun's tomb. It shows what treasures were discovered and their significance. Then, the second section reviews the 100 years of Tutankhamun research--what was learned from his mummy, was he deformed, was he a warrior? Research projects examining his armor, chariots, jewelry, even the kind of wine he liked, are presented. Also discussed is his role in the greatest revolution in ancient Egyptian history--monotheism. The third and last section discusses Tutankhamun's legacy--How the discovery of his tomb contributed to Egypt's throwing off colonial rule and their quest for self-rule. Also discussed are how the tomb's discovery contributed to changes in how tombs are excavated and changes in laws controlling the antiquities trade. Tutankhamun also contributed to the invention of the blockbuster exhibition and changed the museum world forever"
