Abstract

"Combining architectural and urban thinking in an unusual and engaging way this book presents an integrated approach to architectural theory and design. Leon Battista Alberti's assertion in his famous Renaissance treatise that "the city is like a big house, and the house is in turn like a little city", forms the springboard for a series of reflections on architecture's relationship to urbanism and how their once intimate symbiosis, unravelled by International Style Modernism, can be recovered. Explicit references to Alberti's house-city phrase have been made by figures as diverse as the architects Louis Kahn, Aldo Van Eyck, Denys Lasdun and Niels Torp, and novelist Italo Calvino. But, as the book shows, thinking of buildings as little cities provides a new lens through which to reappraise the contributions of many other architects, including Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, Alvar Aalto, Eliel Saarinen, Bernard Rudofsky, Hans Scharoun, Leon Krier, Fumihiko Maki, Charles Correa and Team 10. In doing so, the author identifies common themes that form an unexpected bridgehead between the urban and architectural approaches of Antiquity, the Middle Ages, Renaissance and 20th Century. The book explores buildings from across the globe, including lesser known projects, such as Wright's unbuilt house in Italy or Saarinen's master plan for Cranbrook Academy, as well as more recent projects by Niels Torp, Behnisch Architekten, Sou Fujimoto, Peter Barber and WOHA. It concludes with practical case studies of residential, health, education and workplace projects from different countries, fulsomely illustrated with many drawings and photographs. These show how architectural design viewed through an urban lens provides a conceptual framework for breaking down the scale of large buildings and integrating them with their context. And crucially, a very accessible way of explaining evolving designs to the intended users and eliciting their participation in the design process. Written by a Principal of international multi-disciplinary practice BDP, the book offers a compelling approach to the design of projects at all scales, within an ecological perspective: the sense that big and small, cities and buildings must be approached holistically if we are to reverse the degradation and depletion of our habitat, both natural and man-made"--

Abstract

"This handbook discusses the theoretical and disciplinary background to the study of English-medium instruction (EMI) in higher education worldwide. It highlights issues relating to EMI pedagogy, varying motivations for EMI education, and the delivery of EMI in diverse contexts across the world. The spread of English as a teaching medium and the lingua franca of the academic world has been the subject of various debates in recent years on the perceived hegemony of the English language and the 'domain loss' of non-English languages in academic communication. Encompassing a wide range of contributions to the field of EMI, the chapters of this handbook are arranged in four distinct parts: Part I provides an overview of English-medium instruction in higher education worldwide; Part II focuses on EMI in Europe; Part III on EMI in the Middle East, North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa; and Part IV on EMI in the Asian region. The overall scope and level of expertise of this handbook provides an unrivalled authoritativeness on this field of education. It serves as an essential reference for many courses dealing with applied linguistics, English language education, multilingualism, sociolinguistics and related subjects at many levels of education, including Master's and PhD level studies. A valuable edition for university libraries across the world, and an essential read for many faculty, undergraduate and postgraduate students, educators, and policy makers"--

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to explore Saint Thomas Aquinas Eucharistic spirituality and use his teaching as a mystic and theologian. The purpose is to review the place of the blessed sacrament in our Christian life and whether this may offer some answers to the faith crisis and whether it could be a solution to the decline of religious life. Indeed, many would attribute the decline in church attendance and worst to the decline in faith in God and the doctrines of the catholic church to a variety of societal reasons including the onset of the second Vatican council. However, taking into consideration societal, political, psychological reasons as to what may have precipitated such a radical and fast decline on a global level, I would like to take a step back and explore the spiritual that may have contributed. The spiritual journey is fraught with difficulty and Jesus Himself is an example of what our journey is likely to look like, but if we hang on to the belief of the resurrection and redemption in Jesus Christ and more so, the very knowledge that He is still present for us in every tabernacle around the world, then this should provide us with the hope that we need. Saint Thomas Aquinas was instrumental in defining the doctrine of the real presence of the Lord in the blessed sacrament. Moreover, we know that through the sacraments and particularly through the blessed sacrament God imparts us with grace, the one healing and pleasing to God provided we are receptive and opened to it. It is through some of his poetry and writing of the corpus Christi liturgy that we can really live and experience the real grace and love Saint Thomas Aquinas add for the body and blood of Christ in the blessed sacrament. Many today argue that this is not true and that religious life today is redundant or that is should be ‘different’. Indeed, different models have recently emerged, but then again, what we see is that the newer congregations that live and adapt to the secular ways of life do not seem to attract many vocations. In fact, some of the more classical religious houses that have maintained monastic observances seem to be attracting some vocations in the past could of decades, albeit very few. There is also in the past few years a worldwide appeal for Eucharistic renewal happening, whether this is implemented in the right way or bearing fruits is another question, but this may point to the fact that St Thomas spirituality may still be quite relevant for us today. This paper will explore Dominican spirituality, leading to St Thomas’ work combined with an understanding of catechesis and the role of Christ in the life of faith, particularly through Eucharistic devotions.

Abstract

This essay explores the roles clerical and hierarchical cultures played in the power abuse scandals in the catholic church. In the last couple of years, the Catholic Church witnessed rising revelations of abuse of power within its ranks. This abuse includes but is not limited to sexual abuse of minors and vulnerable members of the church. It is important to note that according to the revelations so far, the church had always been aware of the hurtful actions of its ministers but in most cases chose to protect abusers and neglect the abused. It was easy for the church to protect abusers due to the clerical culture that permeates the ranks of the priests and the hierarchical culture that reigns among the bishops. Thus, rather than following the spirit of service after the footsteps of Christ, the representatives of the church made victims. This essay suggests that the healing of these victims means the healing of the Church, and this healing can come from the church if the church becomes accountable in a way that prioritises the feelings and needs of her members.
