The Taft Court offers the definitive history of the Supreme Court from 1921 to 1930 when William Howard Taft was Chief Justice. Using untapped archival material, Robert C. Post engagingly recounts the ambivalent effort to create a modern American administrative state out of the institutional innovations of World War I. He shows how the Court sought to establish authoritative forms of constitutional interpretation despite the culture wars that enveloped prohibition and pervasive labor unrest. He explores in great detail how constitutional law responds to altered circumstances. The work provides comprehensive portraits of seminal figures such as Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. and Louis Dembitz Brandeis. It describes William Howard Taft's many judicial reforms and his profound alteration of the role of Chief Justice. A critical and timely contribution, The Taft Court sheds light on jurisprudential debates that are just as relevant today as they were a century ago.

Exploring the many dimensions of Messiaen's life, thought and music, this book provides fresh perspectives on the contexts within which the composer worked, the intellectual currents that influenced him, and the influence he himself exerted on twentieth-century music. It enables a holistic understanding of this 'mondial' French composer in relation to the wider world, including his engagement with and refiguration of theology through music, the performance and reception of his work, the ways in which his aesthetics and conceptual universe have been understood by his students, and how his legacy continues to evolve. Reappraising known facts and adding new interpretations from a variety of inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary viewpoints, Messiaen in Context provides a fresh understanding and engagement with one of the most significant musicians of the twentieth century.

This textbook is a complete, self-sufficient, self-study/tutorial-type source of mathematical problems. It serves as a primary source for practicing and developing mathematical skills and techniques that will be essential in future studies and engineering practice. Rigor and mathematical formalism is drastically reduced, while the main focus is on developing practical skills and techniques for solving mathematical problems, given in forms typically found in engineering and science. These practical techniques are split into three separate books: the topics of algebra, complex algebra, and linear algebra (Vol. I), calculus of single and multiple argument functions (Vol. II), and continues and discrete Convolution and Fourier integrals/sums of typical functions used in signal processing, in addition to Laplace transform examples (Vol. III). Offers a large collection of progressively more sophisticated mathematical problems on main mathematical topics required for engineers/scientists; Provides, at the beginning of each topic, a brief review of definitions and formulas that are about to be used and practiced in the following problems; followed by the additional in-line reminders embedded at the key points of most solutions; Includes tutorial-style, complete solutions, to all problems.

This book asserts that the goal of smart villages should shift from one of extraction to one of community value creation. To begin this conversation, we examine the smart village discourse, debates in design theory, non-western traditions of innovation, and sustainable development. Through case studies of smart village co-design we offer a way forward. This book is relevant for engineers, social scientists, and development practitioners. The book will be of special interest to those seeking to expand their inquiry into the role of science and technology in low and middle-income countries. Reconstructs the goals of smart villages to a community centric model. Intertwines the concepts of sustainable development and smart villages. Describes case studies achieving local value creation and circulation.

"For 100 years and more, musicians have been drawn to the potential of musical processes and relationships to embody democratic principles. This book is the first extended study of this 'musical modelling of democracy', as manifested in modern and experimental music of the global North. Four different approaches are surveyed in turn. In the music of Elliott Carter, democratic principles shape the textural relationships inscribed in the musical score. The indeterminate music of John Cage and his associates sought to democratise the composer-performer relationship by leaving open fundamental decisions about the realisation of a piece. Musicians have involved audiences in active participation, as a means to liberate them from a passive spectatorship. Free improvisation groups have experimented with new kinds of egalitarian relationship between ensemble members, in an effort to reject old hierarchies"--
