Abstract

"Written in the first century AD, Strabo's Geographica tells us just about everything one could know about the ancient world of his day. We find instructions on how to tame elephants, information on the production of asphalt, how saffron is collected, the treatment of the aged, the practice of yoga, the lineage of obscure eastern dynasties, religious festivals, prostitution, volcanic activity - to name but a few of the topics his great work expounds upon. From his home in what is now Turkey, Strabo travelled around the Mediterranean describing the locations he visited and those he passed through. Some of the information in his great work is derived from his own travels, but most of it is the product of his reading and research. So, it is not merely a travelogue or guidebook; but rather, an intellectual journey through ancient places and the literature of antiquity, which implicitly asks: "Who are we?" and, "Where do we come from?" His answer involves a detailed description of the first century world he thought his readers should know. In this new modern translation of the complete work, translator Sarah Pothecary renders Strabo's Geographica as an invaluable resource for anyone interested in how the world today came into being. The main obstacle for readers has always been how to approach what, at first sight, is a daunting work of 300,000 words. Even when translated from ancient Greek into English, Strabo's narrative has come across as sprawling and difficult to navigate. Ancient names for modern places used by Strabo sound naturally unfamiliar to contemporary readers, making it seem as if the world he describes is remote from our own, in terms of place as well as time. Pothecary's translation addresses these problems by orientating the reader within the twenty-first century world. As she progresses through the narrative, the reader will be able to locate where he is in the modern world, as well as in the ancient world. By doing so, this book mimics what Strabo was doing two thousand years ago - relating the rapidly changing "present" of his readers to their own "ancient" past. The questions of identity and origin that underlie his work are as relevant today as two thousand years ago. It is time, Pothecary argues, the modern world got to know Strabo better"--

Abstract

This edited book will bring together a collection of works that comprehensively address the various landforms of Israel and how their evolution has been shaped over time by multiple geomorphic agents. Israel is a small country with highly diverse landscapes and climates; this overview of the most prominent landscapes will describe the processes, origins and the environmental significance of those landscapes. The sites described in this book include lowlands to mountains, the rift valley, and desert to Mediterranean zones, along with long-term interactions between their geomorphology and people, which largely contributed to modern landscapes. The book will be relevant to those interested in the geology, physical geography and history of Israel, and the processes that shaped its unique landscapes.

Abstract

This book discusses the smallholder tea economy and regional development opportunities in India. It first gives a conceptual overview of Plantations and Smallholders in the Tea Economy including some comparisons and examples from Smallholders tea development in Afro-Asian countries like Sri Lanka, Kenya, Nepal, Bangladesh, Indonesia. The spatiotemporal analysis of the growth and development of smallholders in India and its tea producing states is then analyzed in more detail with highlights on the production, tea area, estimated employment, livelihood pattern, and market structure in relation to government policies and programmes. Two major tea producing states of India, i.e., Assam and West Bengal are then discussed in more detail (farm size, land relations, and trade relations between Bought Leaf Factories and Smallholders in both the states along with some bottom-up development initiatives). In these regions, smallholders have emerged as sizable presences in the tea industry in 1990s. In a next step, the growth of Industrial Development Cooperative (INDCO) Tea Factories in Nilgiris of Tamil Nadu in the Post-Reform period is analyzed. The introduction and growth of SHG model in plantations by Tea Board in India and their success stories, as well as the policies like Tea Marketing Control Order, 2003 and 2015 are examined and analyzed. The book concludes with the policy suggestions and an in-depth analysis of alternatives to overcome the current crisis. Hence, the book fills the research gap in the tea sector and is helpful for practitioners, policy planners, academics and University libraries, government agencies, and the regulatory body like Tea Board of India. Apart from them, the book is of great help in Smallholder Tea Associations and Federations, SHGs and Cooperatives, NGOs which exist in tea supply chain and also work for the unorganised sector in India. The book is a conglomerate of information and database developed from various secondary and primary sources and illustrated through case studies. It can be a useful document for better planning, policy making, and strategies for local economic development.

This process of systematization and theorization would contribute to improving the decision-making in rural development, concretely the practice of these policies and initiatives. The book shows the problems, results and best practices that cause the rural development in different areas along with Europe. The multidisciplinary and international character of the authors in the analysis of rural development will enrich the publication and facilitate the different and critical reflections on the contributions, errors and meaning of these rural development practices.

Abstract

This open access book provides a unique overview of geographical, historical, political and environmental issues facing the French overseas territory New Caledonia, also called “Kanaky” by the indigenous Kanak people, who outnumber citizens of European and other origin. New Caledonia has seen a long and complex struggle for decolonization, but is still on the United Nations’ list of “Non-Self Governing territories” and there is little sign of change following three referendums on independence and extensive negotiations with France. The archipelago possesses around a quarter of the world’s nickel deposits, giving it additional strategic importance when demand for the mineral is strong. The islands have unique biodiversity, and Caledonian coastal lagoons have been listed as UNESCO world heritage sites since 2008. The book offers detailed insights into the environmental and human geographies of the archipelago, with a focus on the links between environmental protection and extensive mining operations, between political independence struggles and continued wellbeing and economic development, and the differing visions for the future of the islands. This multidisciplinary volume, one of the few to appear in English, appeals to researchers, students and policy makers across the environmental, social and political sciences.

Abstract

Population Geography: Social Justice for a Sustainable World surveys the ways in which geographic approaches may be applied to population issues, exploring how human populations are embedded in natural and social environments. It encourages students to evaluate population issues critically, given that population topics are at the heart of many of today’s most contentious subjects. Through introducing students to different lenses of analysis (ecological, economic, and social equity), the authors ask students to consider how different perspectives can lead to different conclusions on the same issue. Identifying and tackling today’s population problems therefore requires an understanding of these diverging, and sometimes conflicting, perspectives. The text covers all the key background information critical to any book on population geography (population size, distribution, and composition; fertility, mortality, and migration; population and resources) but also pushes students to think critically about the materials they have covered using the perspectives of sustainability and social justice. In this way, students move beyond simple fact learning toward higher-level skills such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of materials. This textbook will be a valuable resource for students of human geography, population geography, demography, and diaspora studies.
