L’invasion de l’Ukraine, au motif du danger mortel que représenterait le pouvoir « néonazi » de Kiev, tête de pont d’un « Occident collectif » corrupteur des sociétés et des mœurs, a posé avec une urgence nouvelle la nécessité de comprendre l’imaginaire du pouvoir russe. Et ce d’autant que la politique d’annexion en cours reflète toute une conception de l’ordre international, dont ont déjà témoigné ces dernières années les interventions armées en Géorgie et en Syrie.Les discours et interventions de Vladimir Poutine, de proches collaborateurs (Dmitri Medvedev) ou d’idéologues (Timofeï Sergueïtsev) réunis ici donnent à voir, depuis le début des années 2000, la construction de cette vision du monde, hétéroclite et d’abord très hésitante, dans laquelle la reconnaissance due à la grandeur de la Russie passe par la reconstitution de son empire et de son influence.Ils mettent en évidence une dynamique de radicalisation, sensible dès 2014 et encore accentuée depuis le début du conflit.Le régime russe a longtemps tenu un double discours et brouillé les pistes. Georg Brandes (1842-1927) was one of the leading literary critics in Europe of his time. His Main Currents of Nineteenth Century Literature (1872-1890) was a foundational text to the field of comparative literature and extolled by Thomas Mann as the “Bible of the young intellectual Europe at the turn of the century.” Georg Brandes eventually developed into a truly global public intellectual, living by his pen and public lectures. On the eve of World War I, he was one of the most sought-after commentators, vigorously opposing all conflicting factions. This book seeks to understand Brandes’ trajectory, to evaluate Brandes’ significance for current discussions of literary criticism and public engagement, and to introduce Brandes to an international audience. It consists of 15 original chapters commissioned from experts in the field.
