Abstract

"This volume offers an updated analysis of the use, meaning, and scope of the classical notion of aitía. It clarifies philosophical and philological questions about aitia and offers bold and innovative interpretations of this key concept of ancient philosophy. The numerous meanings and nuances of aitia remain difficult to grasp. Ancient philosophers use aitia to explain the existence and activity of substances, bodies, souls, or gods, Paradoxically, its own definition remains difficult to establish. This book reconstructs some of the most important uses, variants, and scopes of the term aitia within different philosophical perspectives in antiquity, including early Greek philosophy, Plato, Aristotle, Stoicism, and Islamic philosophy. The chapters analyze metaphysical aspects, epistemological issues, and logical implications of aitia. They engage with the most relevant critical literature generated in several modern languages. In doing so, they offer an inclusive and overarching re-evaluation of our assumptions about causation and explanation in ancient philosophy. Cause and Explanation in Ancient Philosophy will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working on pre-Socratic philosophy, Plato, Aristotle, Hellenistic philosophy, late antiquity, and medieval philosophy"--

Abstract

"Plotinus' Ennead III.7 is a treatise concerning the journey of the human soul first descending into time and then reclaiming its original identity in eternity. The treatise also conceives eternity as the key which grants access to the forms, and time as the portal through which the soul enters the physical universe. Plotinus supports his analysis by drawing upon a rich philosophical tradition including the thought of Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, Epicureans, Peripatetics and Pythagoreans. This book contains an extensive introduction, alongside the Oxford Classical Text of III.7, a translation, and a line-by-line commentary to guide the reader through the text"--

Abstract

"This book gives us a new perspective on the Philosophy according to the Chaldean Oracles by Porphyry of Tyre (ca. 232/305 CE), demonstrating that much of what we thought we knew about this work and its fragments is mistaken. Here, for the first time, the attempt is made at reconstructing the original text by following the vicissitudes of its reception and transmission from Late Antiquity through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance up to modern scholarship. The extensive and painstaking study of the surviving fragments leads to the radically innovative conclusion that this encyclopedic treatise, written by Porphyry in the last decades of the 3rd century CE, consisted of fifteen books organized in various sections. After an initial discussion of the nature of theurgy and of its subordinate role with respect to philosophy, Porphyry describes the entire history of Greek philosophy from Homer up to his own teacher Plotinus, to then go on to present "introductions" to the seven encyclical disciplines whose study is required for the comprehension of theosophy, that is, the esoteric speculation on the three parts of philosophy: anthropology-ethics, physics, and metaphysics-theology. By harmonizing the teachings of Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, and the Chaldean Oracles, Porphyry intends to present the complete and definitive philosophic system, with the aim of showing the universal way for the liberation of the souls of initiates and of contextually fighting the final battle of the Greco-Roman civilization against Christianity"--

Abstract

Abstract

This authoritative new edition of the ancient scholia to Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus is the first to rely on a complete scrutiny of the sources of the text and the conjectural activity of scholars, but is also characterised by a fresh methodological approach: the transmission of scholia is prone to creating different versions of basically the same material, and to conflating originally distinct entities; these peculiarities are fully taken into consideration in analysing the manuscript tradition and composing the critical text. The scholia are thus restored in a textual state that is arguably the earliest we can recover, and is free of contradictions, unacceptable repetitions, and hybridisation or blending of elements from different versions. The critical text is accompanied by a detailed apparatus criticus, and is placed in the context of ancient scholarship by means of a rich collection of parallel passages. Extensive indices are provided at the end of the book. The edition will be an invaluable resource for those engaged in the interpretation and reception of Sophocles' tragedies and, in particular, of the Oedipus Tyrannus, and will be of interest to classicists working on ancient literary criticism and ancient scholarship.

Abstract

"The classics heavily influenced many aspects of European modern culture, yet it is not easy to trace their intellectual power on any author. In this volume, Gloria Vivenza takes on the impressive task of examining how philosophy, history, literature, politics, ethics all played a part in shaping Adam Smith's thought as a scholar, philosopher and economist. This book will be of interest to advanced students and researchers in the history of economic thought, the history of philosophy, moral philosophy, political theory and the Enlightenment"--

Abstract

The affinities between Pierre Hadot's and Michel Foucault's interpretations of ancient philosophy, as well as their impact, are well-known. However, these interpretations have been criticized in several crucial points. This book provides the first extensive critical assessment of these interpretations. It brings together specialists in ancient philosophy, as well as Hadot and Foucault scholars, in order both to explore criticisms and clarify Hadot's and Foucault's accounts. In doing so, it not only offers an overview of the main trends in Philosophy of Life research, but also recasts the debate and opens new paths of inquiry in the field--
