In-vitro simulation of the movements of the knee under controlled conditions is important in order to understand the mechanics the knee joint. The objective of this thesis is to design a virtual experimental setup that allows in vitro simulation. The knee rig that is proposed here is based on the Tuebingen Knee Simulator. The test stand includes a hip and an ankle assembly with 3 degrees of freedom each. The combination of these degrees of freedom in the assemblies ensures that the knee joint has 6 degrees of freedom during the simulation. Weights can be attached at the hip assembly in order to simulate various body weights, while the ankle assembly includes a multi-axis load cell to measure the ground reaction forces, coming from the simulated body weight. The knee rig includes an actuator, which is used to simulate the quadriceps muscle force. This actuator is connected to the specimen via Bowden cables, which transmit the force provided by the actuator to the tendons of the knee joint. This force will cause a flexion / extension movement to be performed. Lastly, the knee rig has a linear positioning system, on which the ankle assembly is mounted. This way, the position of the ankle can be controlled during the test and it is possible to simulate a walking movement. With this construction, it is possible to perform an in-vitro simulation of the movements of the knee under well-controlled conditions. ER -
