This study aims to provide a thoroughly researched and richly illustrated description of the architecture, decoration and iconographic programme of the governor's residence (the Hôtel) of the National Bank of Belgium. The Bank's buildings have become an important feature of the central cityscape of Brussels. Through the wisdom of the Bank's directors, the Hôtel, which forms part of an ensembel of nineteenth-century buildings, has escaped the wave of demolitions and clearances which has disfigured so many historic cities. The Hôtel is a relatively well-preserved example of nineteenth-century eclectic architecture, containing many works of art and decorative features associated with the movement. ER -
