By the year 2013, Infrabel wants to introduce a new timetable which is delay resistant. To achieve this task, Infrabel made an appeal to the Centre for Industrial Management (CIB) of the KU Leuven. The objective of this research can be formulated as follows: Develop principles that make the railway timetable more robust. In general, a railway timetable is said to be robust if it is delay resistant. This is a rather vague description, but rarely a formal definition of robustness is given. That is why the first part of this research will be about an exact definition of a robust railway timetable. As one delayed train can have a large influence on the punctuality of other trains, the goal of this research can also be stated as to minimize the delay propagation throughout the entire network.
