Abstract

How can Jesus said to be ""missing""? References to Jesus are not missing, but rather a dimension of his identity. This text demonstrates that in order for us to understand Jesus and his influence, we need to see him within the context of the Judaism that was his own natural environment.

Abstract

Jesus remains a popular figure in contemporary cultureand Allison remains one of our best interpreters. He speaks around the country in avariety of venues on matters related to the study of the Historical Jesus. Abstract

Though Jesuits assumed a variety of roles as missionaries in late imperial China, their most memorable guise was that of scientific expert, whose maps, clocks, astrolabes, and armillaries reportedly astonished the Chinese. But the icon of the missionary-scientist is itself a complex myth. Masterfully correcting the standard story of China Jesuits as simple conduits for Western science, Florence C. Hsia shows how these missionary-scientists remade themselves as they negotiated the place of the profane sciences in a religious enterprise. Sojourners in a Strange Land

Abstract

Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) was the most spiritually captivating pulpit orator of his era. This volume includes texts of the sermons he presented during 56 Sunday worship services in 1824, based on high-quality transcriptions. Among them, 22 sermons were completely unknown until now. For 12 of the 15 texts published by Schleiermacher himself, it has also been possible to include an alternate version, which vividly illustrates his creative process in writing the literary sermons.

Abstract

Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 2008. With infectious energy and a genuine gift for storytelling, Raymond A. Schroth recounts the history of Jesuits in the United States. The American Jesuits isn't simply a book for Catholics; it's for anyone who loves a well-told historical tale. For more than 450 years, Jesuit priests have traveled the globe out of a religious commitment to serve others. Their order, the Society of Jesus, is the largest religious order of men in the Catholic Church, with more than 20,000 members around the world and almost 3,000 in the United States. It is one of the m
