This thirty-third volume in Erasmus' Opera omnia (ASD) is the third within 'ordo' VI, that is, the 'ordo' of the New Testament and the Annotations; theParaphrases belong to 'ordo' VII. The division into 'ordines' - each 'ordo' beingdevoted to a specific literary or thematic category - was laid down by Erasmushimself for the posthumous publication of his works (see General introduction,ASD I, pp. x, xvii-xviii, and C. Reedijk, Tandem bona causa triumphat. ZurGeschichte des Gesamtwerkes des Erasmus von Rotterdam. Vortrage der AeneasSilvius-Stiftung an der Universitat Basel, XVI, Basel/Stuttgart, 1980, p. 12 sqq.,21-22).The present volume (tom. VI, 3, edited by Andrew J. Brown, London) containsthe third part of Erasmus' edition of the Nouum Testamentum (Greek and Latintext), to wit RomanS-2 Thessalonians.The other books of the Nouum Testamentum will be published in ASD VI,1 and VI, 4. Tom. VI, 2 (John and Acts, ed. Andrew J. Brown) was published in2001.ASD VI, 5-10 will comprise the Annotations on the New Testament, of whichalready have been published: tom. VI, 5 (Annot. on Matthew-Luke, ed. P.E Hovingh,2000); VI, 6 (Annot. on John and Acts, ed. P.E Hovingh, 2003); VI, 8(Annot. on 1-2 Corinthians, ed. M.L. van Poll-van de Lisdonk, 2003). Rudolph Agricola: Six Lives and Erasmus's Testimonies The Frisian humanist Rudolph Agricola (1443-1485) is rightly famous for single-handedly bringing the Italian Renaissance to the North. Owing to his fascinating personality and many talents, he attracted the love and admiration of his contemporaries and the following generations. As a result, six biographies on Agricola have been preserved. The authors of these lives drew their materials from different sources and wrote their texts independently from each other. Differing vastly in rhetorical aims and methods, they provide us with a vivid image of cultural and intellectual life in the 15th century. Erasmus praised Agricola's work throughout his writings. No less than fifty testimonies from Erasmus and his correspondents are presented here. This edition of sources supplements the volume of Agricola's letters (BLN, 2002) and is preceded by an expert survey of all biographical information now at our disposal. Thus it fills a gap in our knowledge of a great man of letters, while correcting a number of persistent misconceptions (concerning the year of Agricola's birth, for instance).
