Abstract

The paper provides an overall view of communications across various areas of economic policy, aiming to help country authorities as they increasingly use communications as a policy tool in its own right. The paper identifies frontier communications challenges, drawing on a large body of research on the salient issues. Although communications can never be a substitute for good policies, economic reforms are more likely to fail or even be reversed if they are not understood or accepted by those whom they affect.

Abstract

Abstract

Bron: https://borgerhoff-lamberigts.be/boeken/is-ons-onderwijs-gebuisd

Abstract

Flying Panels looks at how a building technology became a powerful tool for the construction of a new society. After the Second World War, the development of prefabricated concrete panels drastically transformed the techniques used to build the modern world. Manual labour was replaced by automated mass production, and new concrete elements were used in billions of square metres of housing around the planet. Before turning into what many consider a dull face of our cities today, the stunning image of a concrete panel soaring through the sky appeared in all forms of popular culture: from paintings, photographs, drawings, and films, to posters, cartoons, children’s toys, and opera sets. Flying Panels brings together a group of architects, historians, philosophers, and curators to discuss the way in which concrete panel systems spread across the world, reflecting on their cultural influence, from the second half of the twentieth century to the present. This publication accompanies the exhibition Flying Panels (18 October 2019 – 1 March 2020) curated by Pedro Ignacio Alonso and Hugo Palmarola, presented at ArkDes – The Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design. With essays by Michael Abrahamson, Jimena Castillo, Adrian Forty, Boris Groys, Maria Lind, Jennifer Mack, Philipp Meuser, Natalya Solopova, Erik Stenberg, and Christine Varga-Harris.

Abstract

From small-scale thermal properties to large-scale forestry, territorial, and carbon cycle issues, wood has latent propensities not well addressed in the current discourse on wood construction. Through a range of design research formats - from material testing to in-situ documentation to speculative urban projects - this book articulates and illustrates future architectural and ecological potentials of wood. From under-considered thermal properties to emerging manufacturing possibilities to forestry regimes to larger ecosystem and carbon cycle dynamics, wood is uniquely positioned for ecological urbanization in the twenty-first century yet remains inadequately characterized in architecture, landscape architecture, and urbanism. As the unique material properties of wood operate at multiple, simultaneous spatial and temporal scales - so should the discussions surrounding wood's role as a critical material for design today. This book brings into conversation scholars and practitioners who focus on wood from a range of perspectives - from the working forest to the mid-rise building to the cell itself. The aim is to examine the implications and potentials of wood urbanism, drawing particular focus to the complex relationships between land-use, wood production, and wood construction. While relying on the inherent intelligence and depth of multiple disciplines, a more totalizing thermodynamic perspective on the role of wood in contemporary buildings, urbanization, and territories is needed: from the unperceptively small to the unperceptively large.

Abstract

Advances in the materials and the digitalization of architecture bring about new methods in design and construction. Whereas traditional timber construction consists of pre-cut and pre-assembled timber sections, modern timber buildings today consist of elaborate wood-based materials. Owing to their flexibility and good properties in terms of building physics and ecology, these wood-based materials are ideal for computer-aided building component production. Fifteen case examples from research, teaching, and practical applications provide inspiring insights into the potential of formable wood-based materials and digital design: Woven Wood, Wood Foam, Living Wood and Organic Joints, Timber Joints for Robotic Building Processes, Efficiencies of Wood, Designing with Tree Form.

Abstract

Don't trust low unemployment numbers as proof that the labor market is doing fine - it isn't. Not Working is about those who can't find full-time work at a decent wage - the underemployed - and how their plight is contributing to widespread despair, a worsening drug epidemic, and the unchecked rise of right-wing populism. In this revelatory and outspoken book, David Blanchflower draws on his acclaimed work in the economics of labor and well-being to explain why today's postrecession economy is vastly different from what came before. He calls out our leaders and policymakers for failing to see the Great Recession coming, and for their continued failure to address one of the most unacknowledged social catastrophes of our time. Blanchflower shows how many workers are underemployed or have simply given up trying to find a well-paying job, how wage growth has not returned to prerecession levels despite rosy employment indicators, and how general prosperity has not returned since the crash of 2008. Standard economic measures are often blind to these forgotten workers, which is why Blanchflower practices the "economics of walking about "--Seeing for himself how ordinary people are faring under the recovery, and taking seriously what they say and do. Not Working is his candid report on how the young and the less skilled are among the worst casualties of underemployment, how immigrants are taking the blame, and how the epidemic of unhappiness and self-destruction will continue to spread unless we deal with it.
